Are the Russians still the force they were 2 years ago?

Do you still think they are a dominating force on the tour or have they taken a back seat?

I think they are stronger than ever really, if you take a lok at the top 10 and top 20... Wowza! The Americans really must be jealous of that, being overtaken like that!

Re: Are the Russians still the force they were 2 years ago?

In 2004 Russians won 3 majors, but not week in and week out.
This year, Russians won more titles, but no domination at the majors.

6 of the top 13 are Russian, and 4 of them are 21 and under.

What Russians? Oh you mean Maria Sharapova, Tsarina of all Russias?

But in YEC they where clearly on receiving end. Only Sharapova managed to produce semi-ok result.

But when you look at the whole year, you see that there's plenty of Russian dominance Petrova and Kuznetsova on clay, for instance. And there's even some junior coming up.

Russia VS China, I guess that's the future of women tennis

I'm all alone with my delusions

Re: Are the Russians still the force they were 2 years ago?

Yes they are still a force. Sharapova won a slam, Kuznetsova was a runner up, and Petrova dominated on clay till her injury. Dementieva won a Tier I. Safina produced some great results. Chakvetadze won a Tier I. Zvonareva started playing well again.

Re: Are the Russians still the force they were 2 years ago?

2 years ago you had a variety of players.

Now it's pretty much Sharapova most of the time.... I would have to also say the Russians took advantage of a slightly weaker period in tennis in 2004.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

Re: Are the Russians still the force they were 2 years ago?

Nadia was winning 23 of 24 matches, and reached #3, when she was injured.
Sveta won Miami and made the RG final, and she had an abdominal injury over the summer.
But I don't care about excuses. Results are results.
If Nadia and Sveta are good enough to challenge for #1, they have to show it on the court, not on a message board.

And it's not only the top players mentioned above, there's also Safina, Chakvetadze, Vesnina, Zvonareva and Kirilenko...
