Venus will be "the face of the campaign" to promote equality in women's sports

Tennis player Venus Williams waves as she arrives for a press conference at Madrids town hall, in Madrid, Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006. The WTA Tour and UNESCO agreed to a new campaign Saturday to promote women's equality in sport. Five-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams will be the face of the campaign, which is for all sports.

Agreed.

God, I hope men are never equal with women in sports, otherwise Federer would retire from tennis to attend Martha Stewart cooking show and similar stuff.

Fantastic!! Couldn't ask for a better campaigner as she possesses all the attributes of a world class athlete.

I hope she knows she's up for a real battle.
The inconsistencies are pretty much everywhere.
I think it's rational to make Wimbledon feel as sexist as possible and the only way to do that is to request equal prize money at all tournaments the men and women play.
So if the women's Italian Open gives about half the prize money as the men's then request equal pay and if that means using a sponser that would be considered a bit controversial than so be it.
I don't feel women are treated the same way as the men even in the organization of the USTA, that needs to be looked at.
There should be equality in areas where there isn't.
It should not have taken India so long to have a women tennis star.
The names of South African men's tennis players is a pretty respectable list but the names of the South African women's tennis players is short.
The list goes on and on.
I would like to see consistency and I hope Venus will be able to do so.

That's why someone has to take the lead and I'm happy she stepped forward and hopefully many more will join in this worthy fight.

Re: Venus will be "the face of the campaign" to promote equality in women's sports

I think she is a great choice. Confronting Wimbledon publicly this year about their prize money habits was a big deal. Especially b/c she was a defending champion and still a prominent force on tour. I hope she can get a few other big name players (JHH, Maria, etc.) to join her and make this a big issue...
