After a brilliant year 2004, with Grand Slam titles for Myskina, Sharapova and Kuznetsova (and Dementieva as runner up twice), the media talked about Russian domination of WTA Tour.
Year 2005 wasn't that brilliant according to titles, and it was said that russian girls had a bad year, although some of them were sitting on top places of WTA rankings.
This year there's just a Grand Slam title for Sharapova, but russian domination on Tier I events has been spectacular, with russian girls taking 8 out of 10 Tier I tournaments:
Indian Wells Sharapova
Rome Hingis bt Safina
San Diego Sharapova
Toronto Ivanovic bt Hingis
A look at the rankings reveals that 50% of Top Ten is russian: Sharapova (3), Kuznetsova (4), Petrova (5), Dementieva (7) and Safina (10). And looking at Top 50 there are 12 russian girls including Chavetadze (13), Myskina (17), Zvonareva (26), Kirilenko (31), Likhovtseva (45), Vesnina (48) and Poutchkova (49)
