They didn't really say anything except thank a few people, and they didn't know enough obviously to go far enough into really making a speech in it--obiviously!! Was it Venus or Albert Costa who said in French, "I don't really know enough French, so I won't speak in it" LOL!!! And then they stopped!!!! I think it was Albert! Something like that

GO AMERICANS SPEAKING OTHER LANGUAGES!!

I'm a young girl, an old WTAWorld member.

I watched the taped match, and John McEnroe said just before a break for commercials, that if they spoke French He would leave.

I knew that Serena could speak some French, because she did so in Montreal, Canada in 2000, after each match and also after retiring vs Martina Hingis in the final.

I noted this on another board, and was told that she did not speak it that well. I was confused because of all the glowing reports form Canada when she addressed the crowd. Seems that Serena's French has a different accent than the French spoken in France, more like the French spoken in Quebec.

Gee, People in Georgia Speak "English" but would NEVER be mistaken for people from England.

While Venus' French was more like the French Speak, She does not know French as well as Serena.

John did not leave as he said he would.

Serena was also reported to have spoken Japanese in Toyko, in 2000, although I don't know if she knows the language or just learned a speech that she would give if she won, which she did.

I thought it was comendable that both girls tried to speak to the audience in French even though it may not have been grammatically correct.

The fact that they attempted to communicate in another language is what counts.

I remember that Jim Courrier did the same thing after he won RG.

ALLEZ SERENA!!!

MERCI BEAUCOUP!!!

Learning some of your host country's language if possible is only polite. Tennis players travel in far too many countries to learn every language they run into, but I'm sure many of them try o offer their hosts that small courtesy.

funny that you mention that. i noticed that the french didn't particularly like serena (very noticable in that match against husarova), however, they did sort of like venus. this might explain it. b/c the french have great tension w/ the native people of quebec, they might have sensed serena's quebec-like accent. that's really interesting.

ok, maybe that has nothing to do w/ it - but it sounds good

Serena might have learned French from a Quebec native, since MANY afluent Canadians spend their Winters in South Florida... I wonder why??

I though it was delightful that they learned some French to be able to address the crowd - this is a very polite thing to do when visiting another country and good on them. I think Serena did the same in Germany too.

However, since Venus appeared to whisper to Serena how to say "My French is bad" during their speeches, I doubt they'll be giving interviews in French any time soon! It's a nice change from a common attitude of English speakers though that we shouldn't have to bother with other languages.

It was so funny, I think Serena spoke french after her first match in Montreal. After that, the french press were so happy they kept asking her interview questions in french, and the guy who interviews players on-court after their matches kept talking to her in french. She had this "Whoa, take it easy buddy" look on her face, but she went along with it each time and handled it pretty well I thought.

I beg to differ... Serena spoke frenglish if you asked me... While I don't speak fluent French, Venus sounded better than Serena to me... she was so soft spoken, that I swear she was doing her darndest not to outshine her sister...

Nonetheless it was a wonderful gesture :P

Ok, being very fluent in french I can tell you guys that neither Serena nor Venus speak french that well, they just know some words but the used them and it was cute.
And by the way, neither Serena nor Venus have any kind of accent, they have an american accent, but for sure not the quebequer one (I live in quebec) and not the french from france neither.

I don't know why you guys keep saying that Serena has a Quebec french accent...I mean i'm from Montreal and i heard Serena's speech at the French Open and she certainly doesn't have a Quebec nor a France accent...She just had a big english accent while trying to speak french! I also heard her speak french at the tournament in Montreal in 2000, and i thought that her french was much better then! I guess she was probably just too excited after her win on Saturday!

Also, niftymk, i don't know where you got that idea that there is tension between french people from France and french people from Quebec...There's no such thing! I went to France a few times and i've always been well received there, and it's the same when French people visit Quebec...We're nice to them!! So i don't think that's got anything to do with your idea that the French didn't like Serena...

One player that really impressed me when speaking french was Martina Hingis...she also spoke french in the Canadian Open 2000, and she was very easy to understand! This is a player who could speak in the different languages of tournaments: Czech, German, English, French...and pretty soon Spanish!!
