Kim Clijsters - power or finesse (or a combination)?

What type of player is Kim?

I read that people are labelling her as finesse, but I have seen her many times and I just can't see, yes, she has a good drop-shot but then so do many players, I see her 2 big strengths as her speed and her power, and I don't see the finesse at all. I am just wondering how people have come to that conclusion.

A Kim thread

Well she's not as powerful as the Williams sisters but not as much finesse as Justine... I would say that she is a bit of finesse but more of power... I think she has found a good combination though

Power. Her game is built on two things. Running fast and hitting hard. Serena used twice as many non-power shots agains Jenn in the semis as we usually see from Kim in a match. Kim isn't a finesse player any more than Lindsay or Monica or Jelena.

In my opinion if she just improves her serve just a little bit, Kim is the new Lindsay Davenport.

A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening ear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn.

Actually, I disagree with Volcana on this one. Yes, Kim does rely on her power to finish off points. But, much like the Seles of the early 90s, she employs angles on a more regular basis than the other top power players. Whereas Henin seems to be an updated version of Sabatini, Kim is the 21st century version of MJ Fernandez--she uses pretty angles and measures the ball extremely well, while keeping her UEs to a minimum.

Babsi, in the Roland Garros forum, Hagar tried to state that Kim was different in playing style from the Williams sisters but actually she has more in common (power and speed) with Venus & Serena than Justine. Kim has always been a power player, regardless of the surface. Oh these reason they're trying to lump Kim in the "finesse" group is because they do not want her in the same category with the Williamses which she no doubt is.

Lleyki and come-on-kim: second that! Power AND finesse. And agree with Volcana when it comes to the hitting and the leg work.

However, I'd like to add that her daring, risky play (especially shot selection) is also some Kim trademark. These shot decisions might cause fans some heart attacks from time to time, but it's part of her game.

Very true!!! And that's one of the things I like on Kim her game...Amways that tension! Sometimes a very good risky shot and sometimes not that good...That's my Kim!

I think cos she doesn't hit the ball as hard as some others she isn't seen as a power player but i think she is

She has some variation but not ae much as justine or martina

DarkCore - Look at her backswing, she pulls waaaay back on both sides and slams away. When she's slamming away I mean. Kim HAS nice touch, and other shots, but she's basically ... well you have to reverse it.

Monica Seles is the prototype power player.

Lindsay, Jenn, Mary, Amelie, Venus, Serena, Jelena, and Kim are all variations on a theme. Monica is the theme.

You COULD put Justine in this group. Her touch is so good though, you really can't count her in this group. Her power is the basis of her game, but she employs other shots a higher percentage of the time than the others mentioned. She's almost a merger of Monica and Martina. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can't really call a player with no GS titles a merger of Martina and Monica, but echoes of, anyway.
