Who started the bare midriff trend in tennis fashion?

It seems like a lot of the players today don't mind their belly showing when they play. In the past the shirts were apparently longer -- a lot of women actually tucked in their shirts. Then it seemed like shirts were getting shorter. Midriffs seemed accidental at first, a player's stomach would show when she served. Now it looks like the outfits are intentionally designed to bare the midriff.

Its cool that the women are no longer shy about their bodies but I wonder who started this trend of showing your stomach on court?

Anna, in 96 already!

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of the truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night

I forget what year it was, but I remember one time at the French Open there was a lot of anticipation because Mary Pierce was supposedly going to wear a bare midriff outfit. I remember the commentators saying that it was the first time that a player was going to wear a bare midriff outfit. I think a lot of people were disappointed when they actually saw the outfit though, because it was actually very conservative looking and showed only a tiny strip of her stomach. Still, I guess that makes Mary the pioneer.
