Serena - one of the best claycourt players ever!

Firstly congrats to Serena for winning Roland Garros and Venus for reaching the finals. Serena really surprised me this claycourt season and of course by winning the finals. I didn't see the final but I expected Venus to win it.

IMO, the true test of been one of the best claycourt players ever is to win the German, Italien and French Open (European) triple crown in the same year. Only Graf in 87 and Seles in 90 had done that before. Serena came within 1 match to emulating that feat, only losing 7-6 in 3rd set in Berlin to Justine.

This really surprised me because last year she had never been past the semis of any claycourt event. Graf and Seles are one of the best claycourt players ever, but that's expected, they're Europeans growing up on the red clay. But Serena growing up on the hardcourts in California and to have achieved his feat at 20 at such a young age is truly amazing. Of course this also puts her in the same league as Graf and Seles.

Once again Congrats to Serena on the Roland Garros victory and almost completing the European triple crown, I don't think anyone saw this coming And I still have hope that Martina Hingis will do this one day.

I don't think Steffi played the Italian open after 1987.

Monica of course only had three years when she could have won Italy and RG and she did it in 1990 and reached the finals in 1991 and 1992 (can't remember for the life of me who she lost to in those finals ).

BTW, Serena has the potential to be one of the best clay court players ever but I think she still has a way to go to match Graf and Seles in terms of consistency and longevity.

steffi played rome in 1996 and lost to the young hingis in the quarters.

i think it's a bit premature to say serena is the queen of clay.

You have long been my goal, been my chasing, been my soul. I have hung out on the edge. But I just couldn't let go. There's a time to forgive. There's a time to forget. Close your eyes, get ready, set. Walk me down this fall I'm taking but don't let me go yet. Oh let me go, sweetheart, throw me, around you, like you know me. And remember me too. I think it's hard to say that as well...IMO she's still not above Arantxa in this department and quite possibly Conchita as well..she's still got some work to do.

not yet but she is on her way

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of the truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night

Serena - one of the best claycourt players ever!

The future will tell. She's definitely heading that way.

What intrigues me though is that we probably will make the same statement about grass court, hard, carpet, virtually all courts. She's got the goods, what she needed was health and mental strength; she seems to have cornered those too (knock on wood!). Shall I say ... the future will tell.

Maybe later, but not even close now. Clay greats like Steffi, Arantxa and Evert are still miles ahead of her.

One good season does not warrant "one of the best clay court players ever".....give us a break.

Chrissie, Arantxa, Steffi, Monica...she has a long way to go before being included in the same breath as these ladies....

Oh yeah, forgot about Monica. KindaNice is right though. One good season does alsmot nothing to cement her as one of the best, or even great clay courters.

She surprised many people this year and had a great clay season!

But its true, Steffi, Arantxa, Monica are all in a league of their own on this surface!

I think Serena will always be a force on any surface, but I personally feel she will do much better on other surfaces than clay (and that says something, looking at her achievements on clay this year!)

One thing we have to remember is that finally both sisters have started playing more tournaments which is good for the sport. But next year they will have todefend all these points and it will be a different kettle of fish.

Next year will test Serena's mental strength even more.

The title is "one of the best claycourt players ever" this doesn't mean that she is "the best claycourt player ever" cause we know she isn't

But of course she is one of the best claycourt players ever

Unhappy Funny, but...

I think it really funny that Martina Hingis was considered one of the best "clay courters" by only reaching the finals at Roland Garros, and yet when Serena wins Roland Garros she gets no such props.!!! Go figure!!! You folks continue to amazed me with your constant back and forth and changing paramenters to keep the Sisters down.

Oh, and let's not forget how everyone considered Kim ahead of Venus when the subject of clay was mentioned, and Kim had only been in the finals of Roland Garros, when Venus had actually won clay titles, beating Hingis, no less!!

YOU people are a "piece of work"!!!
