Andrea Leand=Clueless

There are good tennis writers out there (Steve Flink & Bud Collins, e.g.), but some of them are just so freakin' clueless. In my opinion, Andrea Leand takes the cake. She's been off-base so many times, and she seems to have some major grudge against certain players (especially Jennifer Capriati). Anyways, here's one more example from www.usatoday.com.

In a chat transcript with her, she says "Jennifer's been having more luck beating Venus than Serena." Uh... yeah, let's see, how many times has Jen beaten Venus? Hmm...

Andrea also says Jennifer's been acting "belligerent" and players are getting sick of her "prima donna" act.

teehee yeah this is true. Jen has never beaten Venus before. However, I wouldn't say Andrea Leand is a clueless writer. I actually talked to her at the 99 US Open, and she was actually pretty funny in her comments about players, particularly about Philip King, one of the WC's that year. She had been on the tour for a number of years as well, so I would think that she has a clue of what she's talking about. As for Jen's "prima donna" attitude, I have respect for her as a player, but in one of Andrea's articles in the newest Tennis Week about the Fed Cup fiasco, she proves her point. Leand stated that Capriati believed the USTA should PAY HER $50,000 to represent her own friggin country! Also, telling BJK to f-off shows her attitude in that she thinks she's above authority.

I got a little off topic there, but while Andrea is wrong in her statement about Jen having better luck w/Venus, Andrea still is one of the better tennis writers out there IMO.

Actually, I read a transcript of her chat and she seems rather intelligent.

FYI Bradshaw, ALL the women get paid for Fed Cup. Ms. King herself demanded "appearance" money as early as the 1970's.
The figures are small compared to Davis Cup, but the women do get paid to represent their nation.

really? That's disgraceful IMO. The fact that people need to be payed to represent their country is just alarming in my book. I would give my left arm to play Davis Cup. The fact that an enormous amount of players, particularly male American players in Davis Cup, is incredibly stupid. No player is justified in their opinion that they should be paid to partake in this They should be happy to do it for free, and be content with the rare privilege to do something that special.

Heh... at least you don't get her commentating for you during Wimbledon and US Open... I got that!

Poor me... she can't even tell that Jennifer's backhand is weaker than her forehand. After Capriati ran around her backhand to hit her forehand, she actually said that 'What nerves! Capriati ran around her best shot to hit a forehand'... Geez... and she insisits that Serena served the fastest serve in history, not Venus... pfffft... get her away!

Roddick : Grosjean : David : Djokovic

What channel does Andrea do commentary for? I didn't realize that she actually did color commentary!

When I talked to her at the US Open, she asked me what matches I saw, and when I told her King vs. Krajicek, she actually rolled her eyes!! She told me that she couldn't comprehend how his coach had told her he would be top 10 by about this time. As she put it, "When I sat down and watched this, I thought about the decision he would have to make next year, which is to turn pro or go to college. After the match, I thought 'OK, should he go to college for four years, or go to graduate school after that?' He seems to be a nice enough kid, but there are certain things he should stay away from, which certainly include ATP tennis tournaments!"

I actually enjoyed talking to her. She's very nice, funny, and certainly never lacking an opinion on the game! I wish I could see some of her old matches. Does anybody know how she plays?
