Hingis not calling it quits!

If one can be so bold as to say she is calling it quits, I can be so bold as to say that is ridiculous.

Martina said she did not know her plans, and this was not a good day to ask her. She lost one match that she should have one ; but come on - this happens in tennis.

Let's not forget that she won a tier 1 title, and has been in 3 finals this year and had great results. She said she is "mentally" tired - and it showed last night. She seemed to wake up too late in the 2nd set.

Hingis will probably qualify for the year end chapmpionships, and I am sure she will play some indoor and hard courts events leading up.

Myskina lost in the first round and has not had a great year - so let's be fair here. I think Martina could benefit from an "additional" coach to help her w/ her "mental game", "confidence" and her "serve".

I know, sometimes at school if I have a test I know I didn't do so great on, go to a lecture that I don't understand and have someone treat me like trash. I am like why am I in school? Why don't I just quit and work. I am sure Martina is feeling like this but it is ridiculous to say that she is quitting.

I would give my lower torso for Martina to finally get a new coach. A new look at her game.

I am patient, but do not push, for it is silently one night I will wake, and you will find me gone come morning.

Martina is NOT a quitter. She lets herself down when she is not at her best. Still, she needs to put on that fighting spirit and the HEART that she once put in to her matches despite her tiredness. Remember in the 1999 USO semi when she played her heart out and beat Venus? The next day she had to face Serena after a gruelling battle with Venus. She went out and put all her energy into that final. She lost to Serena but she lost with pride and heart. I hope to see Martina cultivate that heart and fighting spirit again.

If Martina could get herself together mentally and improve the serve, she'd be able to do anything. I just hope she realizes that she needs someone to help her do these things. Melanie is a great coach, but--as someone mentioned--Martina needs to have someone look at her game from a different point of view. Never mind a coach--a good hypnotherapist could do wonders for her.

I agree, I always wondered if she had any therapy after her '99 RG meltdown...and somehow I doubt it. She can serve well, it's a confidence thing, and right now her confidnece isn't high. I hope she doesn't call it quits but I guess I will wait until she plays another event.

Her interview is now available at usopen.org. She said that she is still focused on qualifying for the end of year championships and will get ready for the indoor season.

She laughed a lot and tried to keep it lite.

I figured all of that retirement crap was a load of it took her more than 8 months to get to the top in the first place, and now since the players are stronger (and some smarter), it will take longer. Give her another season or 2.

Career Grand Slam in your 20s? Been there done that. Career golden slam your 30s?
There's only 1.
Serena.
