The Amazing Martina Navratilova

What a joy to watch this icon slicing wide serves and nailing volley after volley as if they were old hat (which for her, they are). I like the pairing with Nadia, too. Petrova's serve as well as return are the perfect set up for Martina to work her magic at the net, and while Nadia missed a few easy volleys, she also stuck a few at key moments. True, their opponents were obviously not really great doubles players, Lilia Osterloh in particular played pretty good tennis, and the Marti/Nadia teamwork systematically dissected any chances their opponents had to get into the match. Impressive for Martina to be able to maintain that high level of consistent attack. Bravo!

There is nothing more beautiful than Evonne Goolagong in full flight moving across a tennis court.

And today's mixed lineup looks like a firecracker as well- Navratilova partnering one Bryan brother, versus Corina Moriaru partnering the other Bryan. And the USOpen site actually mentions that the match may be moved to Arthur Ashe stadium! Imagine that- mixed doubles getting center stage treatment!

She certainly is great to watch when she's playing well at the net, very refreshing to see it in this age of baseline slugging.
