Article - 3 x 33yo is the Quarter Finals here!!

Israel’s Tzipora Obziler, who took out the No. 1 seed Severine Bremond in the first round, had an easy time reaching the semifinals of the Legg Mason Women’s Pro Circuit. Facing Venezuelan Milagros Sequera, Obziler did not allow her opponent to hold one service game in the entire match. A graduate of Old Dominion University, Obziler did not become a full-time professional tennis player until she was 30-years old. Now at age 33, she has served two years in the Israeli army, worked as a tennis coach in Tel Aviv, and studied computers. Her experience on and off the court is what she attributes to playing smarter during her matches.

Tamarine Tanasugarn, also 33-years old, had a more difficult time in her match against France’s Camille Pin. The Thai player had a slow start in the first set, only being able to hold one of her service games. Pin ran away with the first set but in the second, Tanasugarn gave her a run for her money. Tanasugarn picked up the pace and forced Pin to reach for each forehand and neither player was able to break the other’s service game until Pin finally broke Tanasugarn at 6-5. Ranked No. 104 in the world, Pin moved on with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

The start of No. 5 seed Nicole Pratt’s game was not as explosive as it had been earlier in the week. The 33-year old Australian could only hold serve once in the first set against No. 4 seed Varvara Lepchenko of Uzbekistan. Pratt picked up her game in the second set and broke Lepchenko early. After they split sets, Pratt held serve until she faced breakpoint at 3-3. With a forehand that went long, Pratt gave the game to Lepchenko who then proceeded to lose her own service game and level the set once more. The final few games of the third set were extremely tight and it came down to a tie-break to decide the match. Pratt got an early lead with a mini-break and ran with it. She smashed an overhead volley that Lepchenko just could not reach and won the match, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak, who defeated the No. 2 seed, Viktoria Kutuzova, yesterday, faced Taipei’s Chin-Wie Chan. 19-year old Wozniak easily held her serve in the first set, letting Chan hold serve only once. Chan made the second set more competitive, running Wozniak around the back of the court but Wozniak prevailed and finally broke Chan’s serve to win the match, 6-1, 7-5 and move on to the semifinal round.
