Fed Cup, why even have it?

WOW, I am pretty sick of watching top players avoid Fed Cup (and Davis Cup for that matter) like it is the plague. This is not a rip of Venus' recent announcement she will not play, but just an overall frustration. You would think it would be an honor to represent your county. The men are just as bad as the women. Sampras, Agassi, all of them avoided it when they were in their prime. Is it really too much to ask? It is no wonder that they are just not that popular.

Kudos to Kim and JHH for playing!

On what do you base the premise that Pete, Andre, Venus (or Martina II) suffered a loss of popularity because of this?

(Not whether they should have, but whether they actually did).

I was referring to Fed and Davis Cup not being that popular not those named above, sorry for any confusion.

The top Players are suppose to play it from different countries so that we could see more top quality tennis...but some top players just dont wanna be bothered...

It would be really nice if they combine it with Davis Cup...

What are you talking about men players avoiding Davis Cup? Not at all. Davis Cup has tons of prestige and that's something Fed Cup is still lacking, despite BJK's efforts.

Sure it is. Ask a casual viewer who won the Fed Cup in 2003. Or even last year.

Maybe in the past few years with Roddick and Blake but look at Sampras' (my fav all time player) and Agassi's contribution to it. Very little.

I don't care if the top players play or not. I'd rather have an international tennis competition with the crap players from every country, than nothing at all.

I don't care much for the Fed Cup/Davis Cup. It brings the worst of team sports (jingoistic patriotism, unruly crowds) into tennis.

fed cup now adays is a tourney for the up and comers.you look at jackson, perry, king.all have played fed cup,and are actually doing quite well.slovak republic has rybarikova and cibulkova, very talented up and comers.almost every nation is made up of the new girls which in a way is good because it introduces them to the types of atmospheres they'll be facing on the tour, and the pressures they will go through,so i don't mind seeing these up and comers play.it sort of reminds me of how hockey used to do the olympics.they took no nhl players, and got all their players out of college.of course they changed it but i think they should go back to the old one.so in a way fed cup is actually producing the future.
