No Grass Court Warm Up Events for Hingis or Venus?

How come both Venus Williams *Wimbledon defending champ* and Martina Hingis *returning to Wimbledon first time in 5 years* didn't play any Wimbledon warm up events like Eastbourne or Birmingham? Won't that only hinder their play and rhythum when undertaking Wimbledon?

Especially with Venus, Grass is her best surface and she is defending her title so you'd think that she would want to get some good match play in before hand to ensure she was in her best form for Wimbledon.

Venus did it before, with good results. So skipping the warm-ups does not necessarily hurt her.

On the other hand, I think it is always smarter to do them - I am sure it helps getting some good feel and rhytm on grass, it won't hurt anyway (unless you get injured - but that can happen at training too).

That pretty much says it all.

Shame that they didnt play a warm-up, but I'm sure they are sensible enough to be practicing hard on the grass even if they are not playing a tournament.

It is rare for the winners of the Italian Open to win the French, but many players have played it.

If players only played the slams there would be no tour. Plus having smaller tournaments means more fans get a chance to see the players and it helps make the sport popular.

That is why I admire the likes of Navratilova so much. She made the finals of Eastbourne 15 times and win it 13. Or was it 13 and 11? Something like that.
