For the superstitious among you.
1. Looking at the past few slams, going back to at least the French Open 2005, the defending champion or a title favourite has been knocked out in the first round.
FO 2005: Myskina goes out in the first round
Wimbledon 2005: Henin Hardenne out in first round
USO 2005: Kuznetsova out in the first round
AO 2006: Venus knocked out in the first round
FO 2006: Petrova knocked out in the first round..
So what about Wimbledon 2006, which big name shall suffer the consequences of this curse, or do you believe all the big names shall survive? I think it’s possible the trend will continue.
In Wimbledon 2005, Venus Williams defeated Lindsay davenport in what was a repeat of the 2000 final. The score may have been different and yes she did not go on to win the USO… but, going by favs, A final meeting between Justine Henin hardenne and Venus Williams is not completely out of the question. If this match did occur, do you think a repeat of the result could occur? In your opinion who is the underdog?
If Venus plays well enough to get into that wimbledon final (a sign she is playing well), I can’t see Justine Henin beating her. Even with recent result, if Venus makes it to the final, with the weapons she has, she is a different kind of animal to those Justine has had to beat in recent times to win all her titles, and she’d win the fight against Henin. But of course that is just my opinion.
