I am so sick of hearing that Mary Carillo is "honest and frank"...

the woman is a bullshitter and she knows little or nothing about the details of pro tennis other than what we fans already know. There's a reason many top stars don't talk to Carillo - she is unprofessional, she doesn't do research, she has no credentials as a player, she doesn't know her stuff and she pulls most of her commentary out of her ass. So many other people in tennis could do a better job.

Either she is a liar or uninformed, but she says a lot of stuff about players that are not true
and she speaks in a tone of certainty

exactly. This type of pseudo-journalism is unprofessional, to say the least, and embarrasses the sport of tennis. The game just deserves better.

Whenever Navratilova re-retires, I would like to hear her behind the micropohone again. Accent notwithstanding, I thought she did a great job.

Yeah, if Mary Carillo had more credibility she'd be easier to take. Like Jmac, sometimes he says shitty things about players...but it's easier to take because he actually KNOWS what he's talking about.

Really, don't even look at me...

John McEnroe has no idea what he's talking about. His ideas about allowing coaching after each set and bringing back wooden racquets and requiring 3rd set tiebreaks for all Grand Slams are among the dumbest ever.

Give me Carillo any day of the week, thanks.

Really? He played a million years ago with his little wooden raquet, in his tight little white shorts. McEnroe is every bit the opportunist fake MC is.. the only reason he does commentary is so he won't be forgotten, and so he can shoot his trap off. During many womens's matches that he commentates on he usually ends up yapping about men's tennis.

As I said on the other thread, Carillo is a flaming yellow journalist always trying to find or create a sensational story to further her own career. She is the worst possible comentator to have on tv talking tennis to the general audience. She is dishonest, makes up stories and distorts the truth.

JohnnyMac is awful but not as perverse. He insists those around him talk his record up. His main motivation seems to be to convince the audience that he was better than Jimmy Connors!

I'll take Cliff Dryesdale and Mary Jo. Cliff and MJ talk about the current match, what's important to watch for, the stategic setting and Cliff will even have slow motion clips from the current match demonstrating the shots he is talking about and illustrating the positioning, arm and body movement. Those are the two best if it's tennis you are interested in. Go with JohnnyMac and Carillo if it sensationalism, rumor and derogatory inuendo about players that you are interested in.

I don't dislike Carillo; I would just like to hear Navratilova again. I also think Mary Joe Fernandez shouldn't do commentary when Lindsay Davenport is playing, because her husband is Davenport's agent.

About Carillo's record as a player...sure, 3-8 in singles is not good, and John McEnroe probably did all the heavy lifting when they won the Roland Garros mixed title in 1977. She did make it to that level, however, so she does deserve some respect. Personally, I think she would make a better coach than a broadcaster, because she did have to work that much harder than the next girl to make it.

Carillo gets too much attention for her gossip.

i think she's gone overboard trying to be controversial ... its damaged her credibility but enhanced her notoriety. makes for "good" tv i guess.
