Reigning Wimbledon champion Venus Williams may still enjoy the strong backing of North American bettors, but British bookmaker PinnacleSports.com lists Maria Sharapova as the favorite to reclaim the Wimbledon crown she won in 2004.

Though the 14th-seeded Williams overwhelmed Sharapova, 7-6(2), 6-1, in the 2005 semifinals en route to winning her third career Wimbledon title, Sharapova arrives at the All England Club as the oddsmakers favorite to raise the Rosewater Dish this year.

Bookmaker PinnacleSports.com has installed the fourth-seeded Sharapova as the 3/1 favorite to capture her second career Grand Slam title. Three-time Roland Garros champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, the 2001 Wimbledon runner-up to Venus, is a 5/1 shot to win the only major championship that has eluded her and complete her quest to sweep a career Grand Slam. Reigning U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters, who meets fellow Belgian Henin-Hardenne in Friday's Eastbourne semifinals, is 6/1.

Despite the fact she has reached the Wimbledon final in five of the past six years and enters the fortnight as the favorite in the minds of many, the seventh-seeded Williams is listed as a 7/1 shot to successfully defend her title.

Martina Hingis, one of three former women's champions in the field, and French Open semifinalist Nicole Vaidisova are both 10/1 shots to rule the grass-court grounds.

Although she's the top-ranked female player in the world, has advanced to three straight Wimbledon semifinals and has earned the tournament's top seed, Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo is listed at 11/1 to win her second Grand Slam of the year.

PinnacleSports.com CEO Simon Noble told Tennis Week Wimbledon typically elicits the most gambling action of any tennis tournament in the world.

"In terms of betting activity in general, tennis is probably our fifth or sixth largest sport and Wimbledon is certainly the biggest tournament in terms of betting," Noble told Tennis Week. "The U.S. Open also draws a lot of attention among our American customers because it's on the same time zone, but Wimbledon is definitely the biggest one. We offer the best odds for bettors and usually, when we first open the lines a lot of customers take advantage of the early odds. If you think about it, in the 64 first-round matches at a Grand Slam there are usually one or two upsets at least and though we obviously believe we have a very good feel for tennis, there are customers out there even better than we are and they try to take advantage of that with the bets in the early rounds."

The Williams sisters recently ranked as America's top two most popular female sports stars in a Harris Poll and both sisters, who have combined to claim five of the last six Wimbledon titles, have historically been among the favorites of American gamblers during Grand Slam tournaments.

"On the ladies side, the Americans have been doing very well at Wimbledon the past few years," Noble said. "Although the Williams sisters aren't quite on the same stature of success they were a few years back when they were facing each other in so many finals, they are still very, very popular with our North American customers. And in fact, if one of the Williams sisters is playing well, as Venus has been playing well, I can almost guarantee they can create more activity because both sisters are so popular with our North American customers."

What are these people smoking?? I'd like to get me some, if it can
induce such absurd fantasies!! Neither player is a fave of mine, but if
they do meet in the semi's, you'd have to put your money on Venus.
She's by far the better athlete, and grass always rewards athleticism.

If I were going to place a bet, I'd put it on Sharapova.

She's pretty much the only one you can be pretty sure of seeing in the second week an all slams aside from the French.

Maybe I should put some money on her - it might make it easier to stomach her winning .
