Comments Sue Barker before the RG final

I am from Belgium and I was watching the BBC to hear the comments before the final.

I couldn't believe my ears when Barker started with claiming that the final was going to be held without the 'big names'. She mentioned eg. the Williamses and Sharapova. It was a surprising final with outsiders, according to her.

Look, I don't what she smoked, but that is simply ridiculous. Justine has played 7 slam finals and won 5. Sharapova has played one final (and won that one).

Sharapova is better known, but she is in no way as good as Justine.

Justine Henin Hardenne is not a big name in tennis. Who are you kidding!
Besides RG is played on clay, and that isn't a real surface either, so why bother with RG.

Go Sue

whatever she probably was a bit confused, it's the age i think. i love you, sue

Im sure she only meant in terms of popualarit for the general sports fans, NOT tennis fans. Every tennis fan knows who Henin Hardenne is, but for the 90% tuning into the BBC coeverage to watch it, they wont know. its plain and simple.

They turn on a womens final and expect to see the likes of Williams and Sharapova. Thats just the way the media has worked things.

Thats all she meant by it!

I don't think it is fair to say that Justine isn't a name. My boyfriend who hates watching all sports and pays as little attention as possible to sports news asked me whether "the little Belgian with the pretty backhand" was in the RG final or the "Belgian who looks like a cross between a gymnast and a footballer". The last one, I thought was inspired given that he really didn't know who Kim's parents were!

Sue just hold her non-Wimbledon sleep during 90% of the season, so that's why she's not familiar with anyone but Williams & Sharapova

A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening ear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn.

People know who Henin-Hardenne is, believe me. She just isn't as popular as William Sisters and Sharapova.

It's a Brittish thing. Unless it's Tim Henman or Andy Murray we have no idea who is playing.

I've kind of gathered that you have absolutely no idea what to expect any more, and I'll just kind of take it as it happens.

I think I've achieved a lot of things now in my career. I guess I can really be relaxed now about the way I walk on court and the way I play. Really not too much to prove anymore.

She also said is the Mystique gone out of tennis and i was like what is she talkin about, eh no of cousre its not, it was such a silly comment i mean RG wasnt great but it wasnt completley devoid of good matches or excitement but if vee was in the final im sure the other thing wouldnt have been said, i think Vaidisova's rise was bad for tennis and RG

Grassonkova.

Unfortunately Sue is like an awful lot of people that are involved in media in British tennis, they don't follow the game outside of the grass court season. The only ones that are worth listening to are the ones that are either on Eurosport or Sky because they are are covering a lot of tournaments.

Sue rules so shut up

No as someone said before Sues tennis knowledge is of the 70's or the grasscourt season. Antyhing out of that and she knows nothing.

Sue has been wildly mis quoted here.. She said it lacked "most" of the big names... I'm sure she was referring to Kuznetsova more than Henin.

And as for the picture of her holding the trophy i've never seen that on the BBC and i watch it all the time, and as for her spending 5 mins talking about her victory, this was not true, she got embrassed when Virginia Wade mentioned it and only talked very briefly... And why shouldn't she, she won the bloddy thing, think she can talk about it!

That's weird I watch bbc all the time when tennis is on and I can assure you it was NOT the first time I saw that pic. I'm not saying that she shouldn't talk about it and all, hey I like Sue and I like the BBC. But they always seem to be the best to go offtopic and start talking about Sue's win at FO, or Virginia's win at Wimby (how many times didn't I see those images?), or Timmy's - Andy's - Greg's amazing chances to win Wimby each year

Allez.
