In Her Grass Court Debut, Ayumi Morita (WC) Def Katie O'Brien (WC) 6-4 2-6 6-1

Ayumi had never played a WTA Main Draw match on grass before today
Today she defeated Katie O'Brien to move on to the 2nd round of the Birmingham tournament

In the second set there was likely some grass court jitters.

Katie has played on grass surface befire so I was very worried at this point

But then Ayumi found her footing and rallied to win 6-1 in the third set.

And she finished off Katie in an hour and 21 minutes.

Her first WTA MD win! She's going to be the best thing out of Japan I think ever...she's so strong and has beautiful, penetrating groundstrokes...and great feel and movement. She's only 16 good job Ayumi!!!

Go Ai, Venus, Na, Tamarine!

well lets be honest, she got to play a Brit, she was hardly gonna lose unless it was Baltacha she was playing

yes but she's verrry good and could definitely beat Arvidsson. This is still a big deal for a young player like Morita.

Go Ai, Venus, Na, Tamarine!

Katie O'Brien - I remember year ago, she nearly beat Ai Sugiyama, when Ai Sugiyama was still in top 20. But a rain stopped the match, and Suigiyama come back quickly eventually won the match.
