For the first time since 1977, and the 2nd timein the Open Era ....

... there are four players with at least five GS singles titles.* Those four players are less than two years apart in age, with the oldest turning 26 in a couple of days. The previous occasion of four, five-time SG champs was very brief. Chris Evert won her fifth GS singles title in 1976. That year, Evert, Goolagong, Court Smith, and King were all active. Court Smith retired in 1977.

This time, we'll likely see all four of these players for a three or four more years, given their relative youth.

* I'm not counting Seles, even though technically she hasn't retired. She stopped playing before Venus or Henin-Hardenne was their fifth major.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Actually, Volcana, there are five, even without Seles. There's a 49-year-old Czech expatriate who just refuses to quit.
