10 Years Later? ~ Monica, Spain and RG~

An interesting trivia tidbit (especially for Selestials):

The last time Monica won a tourney in Spain was

Barcelona, Spain April 20, 1992

R16 Nicole Muns-Jagerman (NED) W 6-3 6-1
QF Mary Pierce (FRA) W 7-6 6-4
SF Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere (SUI) W 6-3 6-1
F Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (ESP) W 3-6 6-2 6-3

and she then went on to do this...

Roland Garros at Paris, France May 25, 1992

R128 Catherine Mothes (FRA) W 6-1 6-0
R64 Karin Kschwendt (AUT) W 6-2 6-2
R32 Lori McNeil (USA) W 6-0 6-1
R16 Akiko Kijimuta (JPN) W 6-1 3-6 6-4
QF Jennifer Capriati (USA) W 6-2 6-2
SF Gabriela Sabatini (ARG) W 6-3 4-6 6-4
F Steffi Graf (GER) W 6-2 3-6 10-8

An omen perhaps? I'd like to think so!

I thought it was a Rome/Paris thing.... she won Rome/Roland Garros in 1991, but I was wrong in 2002 as she won Rome, but not RG... Maybe it's a Spain/Paris thing!!

RG '92 - great memories!

The Graf final was a classic battle of wills. The Sabatini semi was nerve wracking too. Gaby played superb all match to get up 4-2 in the third and then Monica moved it up to even a higher notch and cleaned the lines. The Kijimuta match was a shocking one. Akiko really looked to have Monica's number but then a huge row about a call turned the match in monica's favour. I think if Kijimuta had been given the call it would have put her 5-1 up in the third.
