I Just Noticed Something Very Interesting About Martina Hingis In 2002 :

Martina Hingis gets bashed on this board whether she wins, loses, doesn't play, has unfortunate injury requiring surgery. I was checking on her 2002 record so far this year, and - I'm sure this thread will get it's far share of hatemongers, but to those who will post such nasty and negative things - stick this in your pipe and smoke it - the numbers don't lie:

SEASON MONEY LEADERS
As Of 20 May
1 M Hingis $935,590
2 J Capriati $914,681
3 S Williams $803,000
4 D Hantuchova $578,149
5 V Williams $551,673
6 J Henin $539,886
7 M Seles $508,645
8 K Clijsters $368,724
9 L Raymond $340,792
10 A Mauresmo $281,273

CHAMPIONSHIP RACE
As Of 20 May
1 J Capriati 2031
2 M Hingis 1994
3 V Williams 1901
4 S Williams 1828
5 J Henin 1765
4 M Seles 1653
7 K Clijsters 1240
8 A Mauresmo 1055
9 D Hantuchova 1015
10 J Dokic 857

She's won the most $ this year so far, and is #2 on the 'year to date rankings'. Which means,...she has the earned the 2nd most points off ALL players this year since January 1st.

I knwo Seles, but none of that matters to certain posters. Martina DOES get bashed no matter how she performs.

Remember, to Williams fans, it was about the Grand Slams and big tournaments, not consistency. Well, where's Venus' Australian Open final, Australian Opendoubles title, and Tier I tournament win this year?

As much as Martina frustrates me, she was playing damn good before Miami.

she was bashed that she was washed up around march when she was clearly in lead in the championsrace, that was rather dumb

Through the desert of the truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night

RockSteady - Speaking for Venus fans everywhere, call me when Martina next wins a GS title. Until then, she's trivial.

Feel free to settle for doubles titles, Tier I wins and GS finals. The Venus Willaims standard is GS singles titles. 2 of the last 3, 4 of the last 7. So Venus and Martina are each winning about at their level.

I'm sure without her injury she would have continued playing very well and maybe even become number one again.

Convenient, that Martina gets an injury when she was clearly playing better than every other person on tour. So we'll see, Volcana, when she comes back. But until then, remember that she's younger than Venus, but has been to more GS finals, semifinals, quarterfinals, has more GS wins, tournament wins, weeks at #1, and has higher career earnings.

Have a lovely day.

Rock - She hasn't won a tournament since Tokyo. That tournament started in JANUARY.

Lindsay has won the last two times she played Martina.
Venus has won the last two times she played Martina.
Serena has won the last three times she played Martina.
Jenn has won the last FOUR times she played Martina.

Having said all that, I hope you're right. I hope Martina comes back strong, retakes #1 (at least for a week) and wins that sixth GS title. But based on her play the last few years, I don't think that will happen. She'll have to be a lot better than she was when she got hurt.

But you said it yourself. We'll see.

The money list is deceiving because it's earnings from doubles as well as singles.. Martina is at the top , because she's played more doubles than any of the other Top 10ers PERIOD... Daniela has played doubles in every tournament she entered as well...
Look where Serena is and she hasn't played any doubles this year ---
As for Martina being in the #2 spot as far as the championship points, it's no different than any other year. This has been her pattern from '99. Start the year off on the top and fade away as the season progresses (check the standings for last year at this) :P

What has Venus got to do with this topic??

Or Williams fans for that matter??

In my opinion,Lindsay and Serena being out of OZ and Syndey helped Hingis win those points. She was lucky that they were out inmho. Of course that is not Hingis's fault at all, and she did earn those points, but IF Lindsay and Serena were 100%, Hingis would be titleless right now imho.

Also, great achievement about Hingis leading the points race, but Winning tournaments and Slams, are important. In fact not winning slams, is more a huge factor then leading the points race.

Wasn't this exact same topic posted last week? Hingis is a great champion and has a great game. A natural on the court, but reality is she needs to win a slam. Hingis was not playing better then everbody else on the tour, either imho. She was no better or no worse then alot of other players these past few months.

Martina was playing the best tennis before she got injured?

ROFLMAO

"I told her, `You don't want to get into a hitting battle with Sharapova, because it would be uneven for Sharapova, because Sharapova only has one good side and that's her backhand,"'. "`You don't want to get into that for the simple reason you would win. So try to hit some balls to her strong side, to her backhand, and that would help you with your match for tomorrow
