Bodo just tries to be 'edgy' and 'controversial'. It doesn't come across too well. Wertheim is ok, but he has not real long history with tennis, he tends to lack perspective and his technical observations tend to be erraneous.
Oh, here's a piece I recently wrote about Bodo:
Many tennis fans are surely familiar with Tennis Magazine's
blogger/columnist, Peter Bodo. Surely he is one of the most esteemed
commentators of the game, so with some interest I noted his recent take
on Kim Clijsters, one of the most well-liked players on WTA:
That Kim, She Sooo Nice. . .
"Remember, this girl has been a major-league choker. I think that if she
enters a tournament without an injury, she’s going to come up with one very
quickly. She needs the crutch of injury to take pressure off herself. And it
gives her a built-in excuse in the event she does lose."
Oh, and here's another, just few days afterwards:
Glad You Asked. . .
"You would think that if she's forking out a quarter-of-a-million dollars
to thank her fans, she'd have something to say about it. Oh, sorry! She's
just being extra-nice and modest, right. . . "
(That one earned Mr Bodo a title of "Tier VIII analyst" by certain other
Finnish tennis expert).
And here is a third one, week after the second:
The Pied Piper of Boozer Nation
"This whole excercise, this whole, orchestrated, ham-fisted
tiresome self-promotion (Look at me! Look how nice, nice, nice I am!)
and hollow pandering to the fan base in such a giant, corporate,
self-serving, cross-promotional way makes my teeth ache. "
Anyone sense a theme here? Like, "Kim just pretends to be nice,
she's actually evil bitchy mastermind behind all her facade" -theme?
But okay, lets assume Peter Bodo is correct about this assumption.
It's certainly not impossible. But glancing through the evidence doesn't
exactly make a strong case. First entry mentions Clijsters playing nice
with apparently a former drug lord. However, mysteriously, that doesn't seem
to lead to anything, with Bodo admitting later that he doesn't have further
information. Last two entries concern Kim's champagne party at
Antwerp. After thorough digging of all available evidence and material,
he comes to stunning conclusion that the champagne party is actually
a publicity stunt! No, really? I can totally see why they pay this
Make no mistake, last two entries are telling. But they aren't telling
