Worst things that happened to women's tennis this Century!

What do you think are three of the worst things that happened to women's tennis this Century?

Here's my picks:

1. The decline of the Williams Sisters ( Women's tennis needs their charismatic presence and star power!)

2. The sudden retirement of Martina Hingis in 2002 ( I'm glad she's back but the biggest question remains if she can still consistently compete against the big babes and win Grand Slams again.)

3. The never ending injuries of two of WTA's brightest stars Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin Hardenne.

-The truckload of injuries. Most of the other "worst things" that have happened are a direct result of that.
-The demise of the serve & volleyers and touch players.
-Doping raises it's ugly head in the tennis world, both on the female and male side. Are these just a few isolated cases, or is there more going on that we may, or may never hear about?

Yeah I agree with all of those

1. Monica's Stabbing. Poor girl, she may have been better than Steffi long term, she may not. But this cast such a dark shadow over not just women's tennis but the whole game. [edit, I will have to think of something else, since it was pointed out to me this was LAST century! ]

2. The rise of the Williams Sisters. (sorry to their fans; I think they brought in this power game more than any others, I wish they hadn't been so successful)

3. The long season which leads to INJURIES. While players play for so long, they are bound to be affected. Everyone knows they need a longer BREAK!

Was Monica stabbed again? I think that should be kept in the last century.

disagree with 3

players overplay, they choose totally unrealistic schedules. their bodies are not designed to play 4-5 weeks of tennis in a row day in day out, they should take more breaks in between. there's no law saying they have to play as much as some of them do

They have to; some players will play every tournament they can, get to the semis everytime and make their way to #1 that way, so if you pick a less intense schedule, you're stuffed.

By the way, @ my stupid self.

I forgot it said this century.

they don't have to

lindsay ended the year at number 1 despite missing the whole red clay season, lindsay has a sensible schedule

anna lena-groenefeld on the other hand....

I'd prefer it to be shorter, so that nobody had such long schedules anyway. That way you would have a fairer basis for rankings; skill vs. skill rather than skill vs how many tournaments can I play?

Actually, I think the modern tennis racquet which has made the game more athletic and faster, and thus more physically demanding has a lot to do with all those injuries.

The death of Suzanne Lenglen

Excessive power tennis which, I think, is the main cause for so many injuries as well as making the game more one dimensional.
