Wertheim's Mailbag: AusOpen final 2006 - Sick, Down 1-6, 0-2, wins!

Thanks to perceptive Leanne J. Baxter of Huddersfield, England for calling this to our attention. In the Australian Open girls' final, 14-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was feeling ill and faced a 1-6, 0-2 deficit (sound familiar?) before rallying to win. In the press conference she was asked: Do you know why you got off to such a slow start at the beginning?
Her response: "I was sick a little bit in the first set, and I was dizzy, so I was shaking. And then I will concentrate on every point. And I tried to play because I can't (indiscernible) this match so easy because it's the final and I have to play. I try to play every point." Hmmm ....

For me it wasn't the default itself that was bad it was what Justine said aftwards that got up my nose she just couldn't be bothered to stay out there a chance to win or not she could've handled the media professionally. It also be littled Ameile's win in my book as it just sounded like sour grapes and if a young player can do it so can Justine who cares what she's done to her body in the past that's the past and I also think Justine could've finished the match.

That Person you are calling a kid Handled herself much better than the experienced 4 time Grand Slam winner, respected what she achieved and the person on the other side of the net......

Gotta say - even though this thread is about Justine - Pavlyuchenkova was just sublime from that moment on, was brilliant to watch

You're kidding.

I mean, every junior no.1 has gone on to win singles titles and become WTA Top 10 players right?

A single flow'r he sent me, since we met./All tenderly his messenger he chose;

I knew the language of the floweret;/'My fragile leaves,' it said, 'his heart enclose.'
Love long has taken for his amulet/One perfect rose.
Why is it no one ever sent me yet/One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get/One perfect rose.

Accomplished enough? Maybe so, but winning a major-final still is the highest attainable in tennis. Even if you've already won 4, you should always give it your all to at least go down fighting. Besides, it's not showing a lot of respect towards either Mauresmo or the game of tennis. And it wasn't even an injury she could have aggravated, right?
So her stomach was a little upset. Boo-hoo

OK. May have been a bit harsh.
I've seen plenty of matches where she put up a real fight. And she has one of the more watchable games in women's tennis.

I'm just saying, don't go down without a fight in a grandslam-final.

And definitely, if this were Salem 1692....Justine had better

And I imagine it's Justine, and not you, who repeatedly starts threads on WTA World about her retirement. Nice life...
