Venus thinks mens tennis is boring-kournikova talented (c/p)

Posted on Tuesday, May 07, 2002 - 16:49

She may be absent from the German Open as she has a week off after Sunday's final loss in Hamburg - but world number one Venus Williams still managed to have her say in slamming men's tennis as boring.

"Quite honestly I find men's tennis quite boring," remarked Venus airily, while denying that she has any plans to retire in the near future.

Venus' father Richard caused a stir recently when he suggested that the Wimbledon and Olympic champion might soon hang up her racket and go into business - but the 21-year-old Californian was adamant that day was still a long way off.

"He didn't tell me that personally. I want to keep on playing for a long time," fashion design student Venus told Sport Bild magazine, while admitting that "my biggest dream is to obtain a college diploma."

Venus, who said she had no interest in watching men's tennis, suggested it was futile to compare the two sexes when it comes to tennis when asked if she could beat some of the top male stars.

"I'd probably lose to the number 200 player. But you can't compare apples with pears."

US legend Billie Jean King famously waved the flag for the women's game in winning the tennis battle of the sexes in September 1973, beating Bobby Riggs in Houston, Texas.

But Venus shows no signs of trying to emulate that particular achievement of King.

Another Berlin absentee is Anna Kournikova, the Russian glamour girl preferring to seek out her first career singles title in Warsaw this week.

And Venus thinks that first success will eventually come. "She's nice - I never had a problem with her. Anna's very talented."

Personally, I don't agree with her on men's tennis. I think it is superb. I do agree about Anna though.

Very interesting, at least she was honest about her chances against a men's player. But like she said, you can't compare apples to peaches it's silly. Men tennis is boring as far as personality wise, which sometimes makes their matches uninteresting. I mean they play good tennis, and the level is much higher but sometimes I just don't feel like looking at them in all boredom. However, when it's a good match I'm up for anything.

I think Venus' statements are self-serving. Perhaps she thinks that by calling men's tennis boring that this will maintain interest in women's tennis.

That's sad as they are all playing the same sport. Intelligently, I would expect tennis players to stand up for the sport in general.

To many, it's not the GAME of women's tennis that's interesting it's the people playing it. The men play a better GAME. Not many people have seen Anna Kournikova play a match deep into a tournament yet she is supposedly one of the most popular tennis players. That indicates those people are not interested in women's tennis per se.

Because interest in women's tennis is not based on the game itself, people who are interested now will tend to fade away when they get bored with people like Serena, Venus, Capriati, Anna and Hingis.

WTF? Venus is smart because she spoke from her heart! If she thinks MENS tennis is BORING then that is her honest OPINION! Hell I find it somewhat BORING too!! GO WTA The Slam comes on TV.. I want to see the ladies not the BORING ole ATP.. lmao!

I find nothing wrong with VENUS's statement and opinion. Self serving they are not. Her opinion which last I checked was FREE in America. Noaces, it is the game also that makes Women's tennis alot more interesting. The WTA has more ralleys more net game.. more excitement. The ATP is alot of times about hard serves .. and such. I have talked to many people and they like the WTA alot more then the ATP.. cause they too know that is it becoming boring. With the new technology in tennis.. it has hurt the men's game.. imho.

GO VEE

Sorry Noaces but this is the first time Venus has really spoken out on this issue about men's tennis being boring. I feel like the men have degraded all the women players over the years. Why should someone on the women's tour hold their tounge for the sake of tennis in general? Just look at the criticism woman's tennis get's from men's players like Rios, Rafter, McEnroe, and the list goes on and on. You can bring up numerous degrading artiles in which the men have disrespected the woman's tour. I would suggest that every woman defend their tour. The men certainly don't care about them, so why should they worry about it.

I do understand what you are saying about Anna, because she is marketed as a sex kitten who doesn't need to win because she's beautiful. I know anna can do better, but she doesn't have too. It's truly sad, but I guess Venus wanted to encourage her to do better.

Now, the men's quality of play is better than the womens but they are too dull. I like to watch a good competitive match, but I just don't like the fact that the men are uninteresting stiffs. I think they have all the talent but no excitement besides the Pete and Andre rivalry.

Venus' interviews are always nice to read. I find mens tennis extremely boring unless I watch someone I support. Anna is talented, but she needs to get that monkey off her back.

I am sorry if I offend anyone but I am only speaking my mind.

By adding to the debate, Venus is being just as self-serving as Marcelo Rios.

Men's tennis is not boring. Women's tennis is boring to me because i can't stand all the pettiness. Non-Americans find the men's game to be interesting. don't really follow women's tennis because i cannot force myself to watch tons of unforced errors by so-called "top" class players. It' awful to see.

Anna had an easy passage during the late 1990's to make it into the top ten. Martina Hingis and a still maturing Venus and Serena, Lindsay Davenport and Mary Pierce were perhaps her main competition back then.

Her passage won't be so easy now. It's quite clear when Justine Henin can dismantle her game with ease and players outside of the top 100 can beat her on a regular basis.

It's really sad to see how many people have been "fooled" by Octagon and the media and their silly games.

I was wondering about the source of this story? It looks to be translated quotes from 'Bild Sport'?

I suspect she may have eloborated on her statement regarding men's tennis. As it's presented, we just get a one-liner and move on. I doubt she made such a blanket statement without explaining her reasons. Perhaps it was said in a humorous context. The story looks rather tabloid in its structure.

Men's tennis can truly be boring. A Wimbledon five-set serving contest between Ivanisevic and Rusedski is not my idea of a joyful time. Give me some best-of-three clay action instead between a couple of gifted Spaniards, and I'll watch. The technical level of the men and the quality of the rallies can be stunning.

And I think Venus is very realistic about her chances against a male player. I don't think any female player could break into the top 300 on the ATP tour. Kim Clijsters talked about her training sessions with Lleyton last week in Hamburg. She revealed that she couldn't hit a winner against him. That was no Anna Smashnova talking, but one of the most powerful women on the tour.

Noances you have a right to your opinion. However, if women's tennis is so filled with so many errors and everyone is so "fooled" by the media then why are you here? Maybe you should go over to the ATP site and cheer for them. I don't think Venus saying that men's tennis is boring is self-serving as Marcelo Rios comments. You maybe should read over all he had to say about the women's tour.

Yes, I do agree that the men's game is more consistent and competitive today. Also, as you noted the women's game is increasing in depth. However, I find it strange that you mention other players and someone out of the top 100 dismantling Venus. I think maybe your issue is with Venus, and not about the women's tour in general.

Now as much as I love men's and women's tennis, I have to say that the men are just boring. Everyone in the tennis establisment knows it, and it's not hard to figure out. Yes, the quality is higher but their is not much interest in the personalites.

Iconoclast,

I do think it was taken out of Bild Sport and possibly (probably) taken out of context. I wonder if anyone could get a copy of the unedited interview. It would be interesting and instructional to see how it was edited.

Anyone who chooses to compare Rios with Venus's statement is just plain nuts, in my opinion.

Also I would love to see this entire article and quote. I still agree with her. compared to the WTA in my mind, ATP is Boooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiinnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngg.

I mean really how many of us wish they would stop showing Andy, Pete and Agassi, to show a match between two ladies. How many times have we all got pissed when they chose some lame low ranked ATP player instead of a top Lady?

GO VENUS! with your bad self!

Hmmmm. This is a very interesting interview indeed. It's been a long time since Venus has made such a bold statement. However, I don't disagree with her. I too think that men's tennis is boring. I'd much rather watch a WTA match than an ATP match. I'm just suprised that Venus revealed these feelings to the media. I also think that there's much more to her statement concerning this matter. Never the less, it's Venus' opinion, and everyone else is allowed to have one, and so is she.

Dammitt, Venus!!!

Thanks for the interview. Its rare to find another player praise Anna as such, isn't it? (I'm saying this as its a good thing to Venus do it...not insulting Anna )

I don't see anything wrong with Venus sounding off about mens tennis - she only said one sentance. If she finds it boring, she finds it boring.

Then again, I also didn't see anything wrong with Rios' comments either.

The difference of course, is that when Rios speaks I tend not to take him too seriously cause he is often so negative - whereas with Venus I tend to read more into what she says, cause she seems genuine.
