Anna retired when losing to 17 year-old Svetlana Kuznetsova (ranked 162 in the world) 4/6, 6/4, 5/2 in the first round of the Warsaw Open.

Is it time for a break a time to adjust her game???

Sveta is 16 and she got injured

even if she didn't it was always going to be a tough one.

Just hoping she hasn't done any serious damage

Sveta should get thru to QF min or semis depending on who she meets there

Yeah, I know all these injuries after leading a match and then when losing in the third 5-something just retires. If it was really serious why just don't give it uo earlier? Or if it wasn't why not finish the match?

But of course if she retires she (and from what I can see you as well) can say that she is injured.

There is no reason to gloat over this loss. Obviously Anna is hurting physically and mentally right now and it is going to take her a while to get back into any sort of form. Hopefully, Harold Soloman can help Anna when she gets to Rome.

I was worried when the match went to a third set that Anna would have mental and/or physical problems. Sveta is a top junior player who is capable of giving other players a lot of problems.

Poor kid. Even though she retired with an injury, this loss is going to hurt her mentally for a while. When Anna lost to Fokina last fall, she has a lot of troubles in her next match against Myskina. I hope that won't be the case this time.

Good post Apoet, about gloating over players losses. I'm fed up with it. The fact is Anna got injured, and even if she did retire because she was losing, then so what?. Every single player has done that in their career, Anna has never not finished a match before. I believe Anna is injured, because she wouldn't just give up, I just hope first of all, she's ok.

Spiceboy, you might hate Anna, and that's fine but you couldn't even get Sveta's name right in the other thread. Anna's going through a very tough time just now, and as much as you don't like her, don't gloat, I know there is too much gloating on this board, but if everyone did it, then this board would be a terrible place to be.

I'm not sure where Anna goes from here, that's assuming she's ok and not injured too badly. I think she'd be better pulling out of Rome, then having two weeks of practice with Harold Soloman before the French Open.

Martin, darling believe me, I don't hate Anna. Life if too short to waste it hating each other I just don't like some of her acts like this one of retiring when losing 5-2 in the third. That's all. She should have finished it and give full credit to Vera 's(Oooooooooooops, Sveta's ) win. I play in the same club Sveta trains here in Barcelona and even I can't say her name properly as you said before she is a very nice and humble girl and she must be sooooooo happy after this big win (I can tell you Anna is not the most beloved girl among the russians)

So relax, Martin and please do me a favour: be happy and sleep well tonight. I will

The worst possible outcome that this match could have possibly had. This win will serve no purpose for Sveta. I am sure she will still lose no later than QF. She is not ready to play on this level yet. It will be just one-time hit, like Fokina's win over Anna in Moscow. Did it help Fokina? Was it a breakthrough for her? Neither.. At the same time the result wll leave Anna humiliated and injured.

Great post Martin and apoet29, this is the first time in her entire career that she retires, so stop gloating over this. She's well known for not giving up despite being injured, like the cat said at the other board she finished her match in 2000 despite that terrible ankle injury.

Things were not doing great lately, and now this makes things even worse, i agree with Martin, if it's really serious she should skip Rome and then get 2 weeks off before RG, if not, oh well, just sit down and start thinking things over. I'm dissapointed and worried all together.

And to think that I used to criticize Anna for not playing smaller tournaments.

Today's loss almost makes me feel sorry for Anna. To lose to a Top 10 player is no big deal, but to lose (or withdraw while losing) to a very low-ranked player must be humiliating.

I hate to keep switching sides on the issue, but now I feel that it's in Anna's best interest to stick with the big events. It would be much better for her based not only on what I mentioned above, but also because Anna's not the type of player who can beat someone she's never played before. She seems to fare better against someone whose game she knows.

Spiceboy, what do you mean I don't like some of her acts including retiring at 2-5 in the 3rd set, like I said in the last post, every single player has done this, if you look at almost every single player you won't find someone that hasn't done this. You started off this thread with Anna loses, well that's wrong for starters.
You say about Anna not being too popular amongst the Russians, well big deal, everyone knows that already, and it's not as if all the Russians are all big one happy family, where everyone single player likes each other, no country's players are like that.

Saff, yeah I'm the same about being worried and disappointed, I feel terrible about it, so I have no idea how Anna feels about it. I know what it's like losing my confidence doing things, and that's what's happened to Anna on a tennis court these days, it's a really difficult situation for her. I just hope Harold can do something.
