Those who accused martina of using injury as an excuse should apologize and recant!

Martina did not use injury as an excuse in her post-match interviews in Scottsdale or Miami or Hamburg after her losses there. And yet when Martina decides to pull out of Berlin some people start to say that it was an "excuse" for losing to Venus but apparently Martina never mentioned that at all in her post-match interview. Now it's being reported that she may even be having surgery on her foot. Even Earthcrystal (I think it was here but maybe a different poster who said she saw the match) noted that Martina did not seem to be moving well in Miami against Serena especially in the second set.

I highly doubt that she would be considering surgery right before Roland Garros if there was not a real problem. Hell she has had foot problems since Rome 2000 where she withdrew with a foot problem and then her foot was hurting her during the hardcourt season last summer when she lost twice to Monica. She did not use that as an excuse however because Monica was playing with a lot of desire since she had just come back with from a foot injury herself.

So those posters who think they can throw around accusations about Martina making excuses (which she could have done fairly seeing that she is going to have surgery) should think twice because she did not actually use her injury as an excuse which I think is pretty noble.

It's 3 weeks til RG. Any serious surgery will ko her for that tournament.

Let's speculate that Martina had a foot that was say, 90% healthy. She played Hamburg and discovered that the foot, while not so bad she couldn't play, was bad enough that she had very little chance of winning Berlin. Or anything else til it healed. But she COULD play on it and beat anyone outside the top 50.

If she withdraws from Berlin to give herself a chance to heal before Roland Garros, is that using an injury as an excuse to withdraw or not? Given that she COULD play, just at a sub-par level.

(BTW, I'm writing this with a pulled calf muscle that, if I wrap it, I COULD play tennis on, but not as well as usual. Wonder what I would do in that situation...)

If you could read the article in the Swiss newspaper you would see that this problem occurred during training and that she has been taking pain medication and may undergo surgery. I don't know how serious the injury is but Martina never used the injury as an EXCUSE FOR HER LOSSES and that was my point. Just the mere fact that the press has reported on her withdrawal from Berlin and that she may have surgery DOES NOT EQUAL making excuses. I mean I just don't get it. Should she further aggravate an ongoing problem just so people won't find out that she is injured and say that she is making an excuse by letting people find out about the injury but not stating that that was the reason for the loss? Should she disappear from the tour and have her surgery done in secret and then reappear mysteriously?

treufreund: Apologies on demand aren't worth anything.

Why do you even want an apology or recantation? Posting the truth is a great response to the accusations. Hell, taunt them with it if you want.

If you ask people to say what you want, some will and some won't. Of those who would, whose words would be sincere? At that point, amongst the sincere people would be those who refused. They, as well, might be the most wrong but they would still be the most committed to whatever they believe about Martina. (Or the most stubborn.) It brings them pleasure. If that does it for them, treufreund, you know they need it. Let them have it.

I'll apologise if you do so for your countless shameless acts against Venus/Serena...
