Most underated WTA record periods - *RESPOND PLEASE :(*
This is a thread for players who have had underated seasons or periods in their careers. Let me start:
Most people think that when Monica Seles came back from the stabbing tragedy two weeks before the US Open in 1995, that she was only a ghost of her former self. While this is true, many people fail to acknowledge what a great player she continued to be, up until the later years of her career.
From Toronto '99 to Miami '02, Monica compiled a 134-32 (.807) record and won eight titles. Of those 32 losses, Pierce and Serena defeated Monica twice each, Venus had five wins over Monica, Davenport had six, and Hingis at eight wins. Those five players combine for a total of 23 wins.
Monica lost to Top Ten players only seven times during this period - once was to #19 Halard-Decugis, when she retired due to an injury. #16 Amelie Mauresmo defeated her in Sydney in '01 and #14 Australian Open Champion to-be, Jennifer Capriati defeated her in Melbourne. #27 Shaughnessy, #54 Garbin, #37 Bedanova, and #72 De Los Rois were the other players to beat her (three of those seven were injury related).
Monica was such a successful player during this time period that the only players she lost to in twenty consecutive tournaments, were to Top Ten players (Venus, Serena, Hingis, Davenport, and Pierce were the only players to beat Seles during this time).
Some great periods during this extended time period for Monica was during the '01/'02 seasons, when Monica went undefeated for 18 consecutive matches. Also during these months, Monica Seles compiled an incredible 21-1 (.955) record.
In a span of seven months during the '01/'02 seasons, Monica defeated #1 Hingis, #2 Capriati, #3 Venus Williams, #6/7 Henin, and #10 Serena Williams and she went on a streak of advancing to the semifinals or beyond in fourteen of fifteen tournaments.
