Martina Hingis might as well retire now

Really why is everyone over reacting????? Honestly this happens every time Martina loses a match!

So far this year, she's made the semis or better of all but one tournament, where she lost in the quarters. She's lost to four different players in five matches -- Venus, Serena x2, Jennifer, and Daniela. Also two of these matches went three sets. I don't think that's such a horrible record, although it is true this is probably sub par by her standards. Even other top ten players would love to have this record. Maybe Martina is falling a little bit, but I think it is a bit early to say that she is going to fall out of the top ten permanently and should contemplate retirement!

I apologize for the sarcasm, but all of the negative threads about Martina are very tiring!

I couldn't agree more with you, I'm fed up with it Even if Marti was losing to players outside the top 10 or that, then does it mean she should retire?! As I've said before because I had to reply to a Should Anna retire thread only a few weeks ago. If a player isn't on form, then they should give up? There would be no players left!! Martina is still a fantastic player and I hope all these people who keep writing her off, will remember these words when she starts winning big matches again.

I appreciate the spirit of your thread. People do overreact but on the other hand while Martina is playing some very good tennis she is falling just a little bit short in most important matches. She is showing SOME INCREDIBLE BRILLIANCE in her doubles game and should transfer more of that type of play to her singles. I believe she truly is a prodigy in creating points and taking ball VERY VERY EARLY. She can hit any shot and can change grips very quickly. She has the game to come to the net very successfully against even the most powerful players so long as she places her first serve very well. She served very well in Australia and was playing very well although i felt she did not come to the net enough against Jennifer Capriati in the finals especially in the crucial games. So there is definitely room for improvement and criticism. Personally most of the criticism doesn't bother since I sense that it comes from people who honestly don't understand tennis and maybe have not seen Martina at her best. They really do underestimate her, but unfortunately Martina is also underestimating herself. Anyway hopefully this "injury" is not for real or just minor and she will rethink her strategies and get healthy.

Well I would hope that retirement would be the last thing on her mind. Martina is a great player and eventhough she isnt my fav, I still like her brand of tennis and like to see her play. No one can win everthing just ask venus.

The important thing is to keep your head high and keep on trucking. Martina will get back into her winning ways, she made the semis here and she got revenge on daniela which must have been a real sweet win for her.

Martina isnt going anywhere. The top ten is head and shoulders above the rest of the tour.

ok, im glad u were being sarcastic - i was about to have a cow (moo). as much as i dont like the girl, i hate when people start ridiculous threads like this! aaaah!

o she lost, retire. o she lost a games, retire. o, she retired, retire (lol, just kidding). i mean, its getting to the point where if someone loses a damn point, they should retire (not actually, but you get my drift).

Lindsay Davenport - Anna Smashnova - Lisa Raymond - Sandrine Testud - Paola Suarez - Amelie Mauresmo - Virginia Ruano-Pascual - Nadia Petrova - Chanda Rubin - Cara Black - Tathiana Garbin - Anne Kremer - Monica Seles - Fabiola Zuluaga - Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo - Amanda Coetzer - Rita Grande - Meghann Shaughnessy - Magui Serna - Nathalie Dechy - Kim Clijsters - Elena Tatarkova - Maria Sharapova - Alicia Molik - Julia Vakulenko - Elena Likhovtseva - Anastasia Myskina - Emilie Loit

I know you jest but ..... retirement? Don't even think it. I want Marti to win in singles again in the worst possible way but win or lose she is still the player whose overall game is the most appealing to me. Why? Because she remains the consumate thinker and her game is attractive to watch. I've been a tennis fan for more years than I care to remember and I enjoy Martina's tennis more than any other woman I have ever seen. 21 years old and ready to be written off into retirement? No way!

htf - It DOES happen after every loss, so that's a legit complaint. However, Martina herself actually brought up retirement this trip, with comments about Conchi and Arantxa. (Perfectly reasonable comments, I might add.) Has it occurred to you that these threads might be motivated, at least in part, by wishful thinking? How many 'Venus is going to retire before she's 25' threads have we seen? A couple hundred. Yeah, they wish. Same thing with Martina. 99% of the tour (and their fans) eagerly wish to see her gone, because they can't beat her and never will.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Martina should play til she's 30. And I expect she'll be in the top ten continuously til then. But if SHE brings up retirement, we the-usual-suspects are likely to comment.

I think its funny when people say these kind of things about Martina. To me the only reason people are really saying these kind of things is because she's losing, and not winning that much. The people she plays against were VERY good at the time, its not Martina's fault that she couldn't do anything, we all know she tried but it wasn't good enough. IMO, people are saying that she needs to retire is because BEFORE she was not like this she was the one with lots of glory. Some people have down times in their career, obviously martina is in that "time" but she's young and still has plenty to do with her career. Retirement is far from Martina's career.

Venus ~ Serena ~ Nadal

First of all, I hope everyone realizes that I was not being serious! In no way do I think that Martina should retire based on her recent results! I was only expressing my exasperation at the excessive number of negative threads that appear after she loses a match. (Ali is venting, had to get that out! )

It hadn't occurred to me that these threads are motivated by wishful thinking, since they usually follow her losses. Maybe this is true. Also, when people talk about Venus retiring, it is usually motivated by something her father says, not by her play. (Is anyone saying she is washed up after losing to Kim? Of course not! But if Martina had lost to Kim, we would see threads saying that Martina is going to drop out of the top ten, she'll never win a GS or Tier I again, etc.) Finally the Martina's comments about retirement, I thought that she was talking about some time in the future, *when* she doesn't feel competitive anymore, just my opinion though.

Wow, this is longer than I intended! To sum up, I hope Martina can find her form from January, and I don't think losing a match to Venus means her career is over!
