Is it the estonian year? After Maret Ani who broke the Top 100 a couple of monthe ago, it's Kaia time...And just in time to be part of the Top 100 year ending ranked player. She's up 19 spots this week after being runner up in Dubai $75K last week. A very good tournement in Dubai where she upsetted 2nd seed/n°74 Lourdes Dominguez Lino after falling to impressive 1rst seed/n°40 Marion Bartoli.
She's up 128 spots in a year...And even more, she nearly didn't play a the beginning of the season and was ranked 881! Her best results of the year are a victory in Fano $75K challenger and a sei final in Kolkata $170K Tier III event.
Despite her new Top 100 player status, she'll have to participate to the qualies in the A.O because she was n°°117 when the player list has been published.
However, considering that she has very few points to defend till june 2006, she could rise in the world ranking during the 1rst part of 2006.
Faster moovers of the week inTop 10, 20, 50, 100, 150, 200:
Top 10, 20:
no change due to WTA off-season period
Marion BARTOLI n°37 (+3):
Marion was the only top 50 player to compete last week..attracted by the warm season and luxuray organisation in the Emirates. However, she proved that she was in Dudai to play tennis more than shopping and took this tournement very seriously to win it. She notably outclassed promising talents such as Yaroslava Shvedova and Emma Laine...and she only lost 10 games in 5 matches!!
Kaia KANEPI n°98 (+19):
Henrieta NAGYOVA n°145 (+25):
Henrieta finished the year in the top 150 just in time. Of course she's far away from her best period when she was closed to the top 20 (sept 2001). However, she's still enjoying playing tennis and reached the semi final last week in $75K Dubai challenger after retiring against eventual champion Marion Bartoli. Last year she started her season in march due to injury...maybe she should benefit from that to rise in the wta ranking at the beginning of 2006.
Menerva JUGIC SALKIC n°158 (+20):
No one could be more stable than Minerva...she's finishing the year n°158 and she finished 2004 at n°..157.
This week, she's up 20 spots after reaching the final in $50K Bergamo challenger upsetting rising estonian 2nd seed/n°82 Maret Ani and 6th seed/n°151 Yvonne Meusburger before loosing to 1rst seed/n°69 Ekaterina Bychkova.
Hope you'll enjoy it and do not hesitate to comment....hope to be back in 2006 to follow that weekly thread!
