SMASH / Wilson Party @ Glo in New York City
On Saturday night, some of the gameıs biggest stars Venus and Serena Williams, and Justine Henin-Hardennecame out to celebrate the introduction of Wilsonıs new sticks for chicks, called the W line. This wasnıt some cheesy press conference with boring men in suits. The companyıs stable of pro players, along with dozens of reporters, paparazzi, and other industry insiders, were clubbing at Glo in the trendy meatpacking district of Manhattanıs lower West side.
No doubt: This was the hottest ticket in town.
SMASH was there, too. Not to crash the party. We had to be on our best behavior, because we were the main sponsor of the shindig. But hey, any excuse to rub elbows with the gameıs elite is good enough for us.
Anyway, in the VIP room, Justine Henin-Hardenne and her husband, Pierre, sat across a table and held hands for most of the evening, oblivious to the packed house around them. Clearly, two years of marriage hasnıt dimmed their passion. And although sheıs one of the most ferocious people youıll ever see on the court, off it Justine is unimposing and sweet. Most people, it seemed, didnıt even noticed that she was at the eveningıs party.
Sir Roger came shortly thereafter, looking as dapper as usual. The man just radiates cool. He worked the room with aplomb, much like the way he plays tennis, making time for everyone and anyone who wanted his autograph or just to say high. He also caught up with bud Jonas Bjorkman before heading to a quiet corner to chill.
There were a few false alarms that Serena had entered the building. Then rumor spread that she might not show. Word is, the night before at a WTA function she and Venus left prematurely, after their friend, pop star Brandy, thought the bash was kind of lame and wanted to head over to Nobu instead. Would the Williams sisters blow off this event? No worries: She and Venus showed, without, to our knowledge, Brandi, taking the stage to promote the W line. (For more on these racquets, go to Wilsonıs website.)
Other players came and went Ivanovic, and a certain ATP player, who shall remain nameless, who was showing off a naked picture of a woman on his cell phone. We presume she is his girlfriend.
And in a corner, yawning on a sofa, was Taylor Dent. The big guy kept to himself. Later in the evening, I bumped into his agent, who told me that these kinds of PR
gigs arenıt Taylorıs thing.
The same canıt be said of former French Open doubles champion Murphy Jensen. Really, is there an event this guy doesnıt attend? The dudeıs everywhere.
