Article: Dokic continues progress

Dokic continues progress
December 18, 2005

JELENA Dokic is only one match away from earning a place in next month's Australian Open on merit.

The world No.349 powered into the final of the wildcard play-off at Melbourne Park today with a 6-1 6-3 demolition of NSW left-hander Trudi Musgrave.

It was the third straight-sets victory in as many days for Dokic, who has looked more comfortable with each passing match.

Her opponent in tomorrow's final will be Monique Adamczak, who was forced to endure a one-hour rain delay when just two points short of victory before ousting Cindy Watson 6-4 6-4.

Adamczak, from NSW, made her grand slam debut at last year's Australian Open, where she bowed out in the first round to Karolina Sprem of Croatia.

The winner of tomorrow's match will be guaranteed a wildcard for the opening grand slam event of 2005, although tournament organisers would almost certainly give one to Dokic regardless of the result.

She has not played at the Australian Open since 2001 when her father claimed the draw had been rigged against her after she was pitted against Lindsay Davenport in the opening round.

Dokic represented Serbia and Montenegro in the intervening years before falling out with her controversial father Damir.

She contacted Tennis Australia officials several months ago saying she wanted to rebuild her once high-flying career by playing again for Australia.

Dokic has yet to drop a set in the wildcard play-off in victories over Beti Sekulovski, Shayna McDowell and Musgrave.

Queenslander Marc Kimmich and young Victorian Andrew Coehlo won today's men's semi-finals.

Kimmich, who also won the wildcard mini-tournament last year, downed Luke Bourgeois 6-4 6-4. Coehlo had an easier day, advancing when his semi-final opponent Joe Sirianni pulled out with a calf strain when trailing 4-1 in the opening set.

I didn't say anything the last few matches cause I've seen Jelena fall apart in so many matches the last few years but this does look promising for this talented player. Earn your place in the draw Jelena by winning the next match!

RIP Elena Baltacha, thank you for dedicating your life to a sport we all love. You'll be missed but never forgotten.

It's interesting how Lindsay finds herself into controversies.

"Everybody always said I didn't get that job because my wife is white. If you're not strong enough to look through that then you have the issue."
