New Ranking System is available on WTA tour official website

The WTA tour has posted up the new ranking system. There is no more quality point, and the grand slam points has increased a bit.

Unfortunately, Lindsay is sure to lose her No.1 ranking no matter how well she will do in the Austrailan Open.

Lindsay Davenport 2005
88 weeks as World NO. 1

Now Amelie is much more close to Kim and Lindsay

I'm cheering for Amélie and Shahar.

its the worst thing the wta can do... its stupid, it was good, there is no point changing it. And they have no problems of public, why this thing about Mandatories Tier I?? To obligate players to play??... mmmhhh, first change that crazy-lenghty tour, and then make whatever to the rankings... ains

I also don't like the new system. The ranking points were a good extra indication, especially at the Slams, which are now devalued in comparison to the other tournaments, especially the YEC. Ah well, it's no use to keep whining about it I guess A system always has its downsides!

Once again the WTA rewards volume over quality! Look for Nadia to shoot up the ranks.

Its actually pretty deadly to the tour if they have increased Tier 1 and GS points as well . How on earth does a low ranked player advance?. If you can't get into smaller Tier 1s someone else gets the points whilst you get zilch at lower tiers and you never get the mega points available to anyone who gets near the end of a GS. You can't even get a boost by beating a top player as you now get the same points as if you beat a no-hoper. Its go straight to the top or get there more slowly and possibly not make it at all.

It also makes even worse the nonsenses of 2005 where one or two big GS wins can put you way up the rankings despite how badly you play for the rest of the year and how lucky your GS draw was - the rankings just lose more of their utility for seeding or prediction.

It basically just benefits players who do pretty well in top tournaments and are fit enough to play a lot of them - winning, playing great matches or beating top players are now less essential. Who do you think that will benefit? at the same time those players benefit because it makes it more difficult for newcomers to eject them from the top 10.

More you look at the figures the worse it is. Players will now all have fewer points so distinctions will be smaller once you get below the players who can make GS Finals repeatedly before losing. Just look at what someone around where Serena is ranked now gets for a walkover in the later stages of a big tournament and what that does to the rankings. There are going to be some very very strange rankings in 2006.

I think the only thing they should have changed was increasing the points to a grand slam winner, that's it. Erasing quality points is rediculous, and there is not need to increase Tier I's. GS's winners should be it.

Why don't they just match the ATP's system to make both sides equal in terms of system of rankings? ATP don't seem to have any problems with theirs...or is it that WTA fans just like to bitch?
