Was anyone else surprised at this? : Venus d Martina 7-5 6-3

I know I was.

Sure Venus COULD beat Martina on clay.
Sure Venus HAS beaten Martina on clay.

But I was expecting three sets, and probably at least one tie-breaker. Especially with Venus at only 99% (ankle).
Who SAW the match? What went on? I for one kind of expected a Hingis win, even though I was rooting hard for Venus. I can't get any decent stats out of the tournament website.

No I'm not surprised. I predicted a 6-4, 7-5 score for the match. Anyway I didn't think it would be hard for Venus to get up for this match and focus.

I wasn't particularly surprised at the end result - before the match, I had absolutely no clue who would win, it was a total toss-up - but I WAS surprised it didn't go to a third set.

Yeah, I was surprised ...

I didn't think Hingis would get as many games as she did off the Countess of Clay.

Well, i was spot-on in my prediction.

::stop the accolades, i am not a prophet, okay ::

I was not suprised at all. Venus should have even won 6-4 6-2. I just followed the scores.
You see, the QUEEN can really move the ball around, contrary to what some might have you believe. In fact i would expect Venus to beat the top players most of the tome on Clay. Because she rallies more and can measure her aggressiveness better than say Serena.

All the characteristics of clay presents other opportunities, although she cannot play dominant tennis on clay as she does on hardcourts. But note that nobody could do that either. On clay, opponents always have chances.

Personally Martina, the way she plays now, have better chance on hardcourts against the QUEEN, because she could get some pace. Remember, what separates the QUEEN from the other tall players is her ability to get to all balls and return with fire (courtesy of Lindsay). So she has more time to plan her game.

I hope you being the great Statistician, you've noticed that it was far back as 1998 when Martina beat Venus on clay.

Unhappy

Before the match I thought it would go to three sets, but in the first set they kept breaking each others serve. But I had a feeling Venus would improve her serve for the second set and keep breaking Hingis' serve and win it in two.

I was definitely surprised, because I really thought that Vee's ankle would hamper her performance :P

No surprise here, just relief.

Maybe a little by the relative ease of victory. But in all honesty, Martina's days of competiting with the sisters has long since past. She may on one of her great days gain a victory, but it alas will be rare..........very rare.

Beat'em down Ms Williams, beat'em down!
SERENA PRINCESS OF POWER

Victoria Duval - coming to a slam near you
Françoise Abanda definitely a future #1 --- Taylor Townsend devastation on the march
Venus and Serena ferocious grannies --- Kimiko Date Krumm great granny still doing her thing.

Talking

Yeah, I was a little surprised that Venus just came out firing, always having a lead...

I was thinking that Venus might start slow again like she did against Arantxa, so it did surprise me. However, the winner of this match didn't surprise me...

I wasn't surprisd at all. I *knew* that Venus would win this match, sort of like a gut feeling. Martina CAN beat Venus, and convincingly, but she has sucked lately.(I hate to admit it) She HAS to change her game plan!!! It's so frustrating to see her go out there and make the same mistakes she has done, over and over again, when they're completely changeable. Venus played impeccably tough I'm told, hopefully Marti will get revenge next time. GO MARTINA!!!

Beforehand I thought Martina had a great shot, but I'm not at all surprised at the final result. I'm never surprised anymore when Martina loses to either the Williams sisters or Capriati. No matter the surface, mentally she just seems completely lost against these players.

I saw the match and Venus was really dominant, nothing Martina could have done. In fact I bemieve Venus made less unforced errors than Martina and of course many more winners. She was getting everything back and often hit a winner out of the most amazing positions. Martina was playing well, sometimes a bit too passive but there was not much she could do really. It was a very entertaining match and if Venus can keep up this level of play, she'll be hard to beat in the weeks to come...

I predicted that if Venus came out aggressive from the start, she would win in two easy sets. I didn't see the match, but from the scores it looks like Martina came out aggressive in the first set also ... so maybe that first set wasn't so easy, I don't know.
