2006 - Could this be the year we have all been waiting for?

2006 should prove to be the year of great expectations, as well as fabulous tennis for fans and players alike.

We have the re-emergence of past players like Hingis and Dokic, and a field of veterans playing out of their minds (Davenport, Pierce, and Mauresmo). Combine that with the greatest champions of the last few years (Williams x2, Clijsters, Henin-Hardenne, Sharapova) and that's sure to be a spectacular season! But what makes this even more interesting is that all these players will be competing with a whole slew of young players, eager to make their mark on the tennis world. Vaidisova & Ivanovic are looking to steal the spotlight, as well as some others with big games. Look out for Dementieva and Petrova to make some leaps and bounds as well...

I for one, despite some great wins from my favorite players, am looking forward even more to 2006 and the potential match-ups from some very talented players.

11 Grand Slam Singles Winners are likely to be on Tour in 2006 (# of majors won in brackets):

Reigning Champions:

Kim Clijsters (1)
Venus Williams (5)
Justine Henin (4)
Serena Williams (7)

The class of 2004:
Svetlana Kuznetsova (1)
Maria Sharapova (1)
Anastasia Myskina (1)

Champions of 1997-2002
Lindsay Davenport (3)
Mary Pierce (2)
Jennifer Capriati (3)
Martina Hingis (5)

************************************************** ***
In addition we may just see 3 stars of the 1990s playing WTA singles matches

Monica Seles (9)
Conchita Martinez (1)
Martina Navratilova (18)

.......plus Steffi Graf (22) could put in a repeat performance at WTT and I wouldn't be surprised if she and André don't enter a slam mixed doubles event to make one of his dreams come true in what could possibly be his last year.

That would mean that 15/20 of the women who won a major in the last TWENTY years with the exceptions of ASV (4 in-89-94-98), Gaby (1 in 90), Hana (1 -in 87), Jana (1 -in 98) and Iva (1 -i 97), would be playing competitive pro tennis in 2006. That translates into the winners of 72 of the last 80 majors (90%).

Wouldn't it be great if Hingis reclaimed everything that was once hers and also winning the French?
