Venus Williams: The thinking in 1999 and now

As late as 1999, there were quite a few people who posted or started threads arguing that Venus Williams would never amount to much as a player. Never win anything important. Certainly never win a GS title. Certainly never be #1.

What I'd lke to ask those people is, what was it about your estimate of Venus that was in error?

It's easy in 2002 to look at her speed, power and 4 GS titles and jump on the bandwagin. It's easy to have been a fan since stories began popping up inthe late 1980's. It's not so easy to analyze why things SEEM like they should go one way, and then see them go another.

How is the player Venus IS different than the player you thought she'd be in 1999?

(I would like to ask my fellow Williams fans NOT to argue with whatever is posted in reply to this. Let folks have thier say. Some things may be posted we disagree with, but I'm asking Venus's detractors to extend themselves here, so we should be polite if they do.)

Can I start with 97? in 97 her footwork was so bad, it seemed she never was in a good position to hit the ball, she learnt quick though, then from 98 and 99 I thought that she was a very nervy player often goes down in finals while playing perfectly in the semis and I thought she will never come over that, then in 99 she started slowly to improve that but then they were still the grand slams and I thought she will never come over that and then the quarters of wimbledon 2000 came and everything changed afterwards and the rest is history as we know now

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of the truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night

In '99 she didn't seem to play her best in the important matches.

She made errors for going for way too much in points.

Irma is right, her footwork was pretty awful.

But I think the impression was that she didn't have the mental tools to become number 1....funny how things have turned out

After her reaching the US final in 1997, I'm surprised that people still doubted her potential.

My personal opinion was that in those early years she just didn't have the patience - she kept going for far too much far too early. Venus is much better when she waits for an opening.

I also felt that she kept losing big matches to Hingis and Davenport in the grand slams and that was what held her back.

Of course, she turned all those things around at Wimbledon 2000 - that QF against Martina where she turned it around was a huge turing point IMHO - and the improvement in her patience and temperament is what has kept her winning.
