In today's Berlin newspaper "Berliner Morgenpost" they are reporting about the press conference given yesterday by Sheikh Bin-Faleh Al-Thani. He said that they want to stay in Berlin if they also find local sponsors (besides TOTAL who will be again sponsor in 2006, but not as a title sponsor).
Also, the article discusses the possibilities for the future. It might be possible that the Qatar people want to change the status of their tournaments (Doha:Tier 1, Berlin: Tier 2), but this should be very difficult as
1. Doha stadium does not provide enough seats for a Tier I tournament (according to WTA rules)
2. WTA is unlikey to approve because of Indian Wells and Key Biscane coming up after Doha
3. Dubai as a main sponsor of the WTA might interfere
4. players are supposed to interfere as they should prefer Berlin at this time of the year and in preparation for the French Open
However, the Sheikh expressed his willingness to keep the tournament in Berlin (no matter which status) depending on whether they also find local sponsors.
Finally, he said that Berlin is likely to be Tier I in 2007 again.
