Sad news, Jelena Dokic retires (Unsubstantiated rumor)

According to the well-connected Tenis Serbia writers it looks like Jelena has retired from tennis after an unsuccessful comeback attempt and organizers unwillingness (why !?) to give her wildcards for key tournaments.

she doesn't show up for tournaments (according to some reports), so why even bother offering her them?

The part about the wildcards isn't quite true. Indian Wells offered Jelena a wildcard into the main draw, but she declined it, wanting to qualify on her own merits instead. IIRC, Wimbledon also reserved Jelena a wildcard which she declined in favour of training for seven weeks. So tournaments are happy to offer wildcards to Jelena, but she's more determined to earn her way in.

If Jelena has retired, I hope it's only temporary. A break from tennis is what she needs.

How would they know this if noone has talked to her? She isn't letting the media talk to her etc. Let's hope it isnt. She didn't do THAT bad at the itf events, and had a few promising results. Her last tournament for example was actually reasonably good despite having to retire in the 2nd rnd (after Qualifying).

I hope she doesn't retire - it would be a shame as she is still young. I think that Jelena is probably just disillusioned with tennis right now having seen her rank drop rapidly. Hopefully she can get back to her highest level of tennis. She probably just needs a good break.

does anyone else remember when Jelena won her first tournamnet (being basically a toddler still) and all the hupla around her in Aus, one of the top male players (Mark P. or Pat R), said that they wish media left her alone and that kind of attention (at that time) could burn her out early? One of them (who said that) definitely has a crystal ball...

She has the game but right now it sounds like she is too upset and lazy to play challengers and get back to top 50 so that she can enter the big tournaments... She should be encouraged about how Agassi managed to come back by playing challengers.
