In the rankings only your best 17 count. In the race every tournament counts - the more you play the more points you can get.

really - seems like you are right
but thats a joke - why are counting 23 for A-L into the race-ranking?

why making a restriction of "best 17" for the ranking, but for the race every torunament counts?

not my WTA-Tour anymore

I thought the whole idea was that at the end of the year (31 December), the race points and the 52-week points were the same, and then the race resets to zero on January 1.

Have they changed it?

No - race points have always counted ALL tourneys, not just best 17 - otherwise you wouldn't even *NEED* to have race standings, you'd just take the top 8 players in the rankings!

it's like a small reward for the players who do well in tournies over and above the 17 divisor - even though the extra tournies don't help their ranking, they do count toward reaching the YEC. This year Schnyder and Petrova are both probably going to make the YEC on the strength of their 18th-25th tournies, instead of Williams and Dementieva who have better divisors.

You are right that its an odd way of doing it. It may be the only way of doing it though when everyone starts the year with no points. It must be done this way because they would otherwise have to have two ways of counting - until you get to number 17 you count everything and afterards you have to find the best 17 - thats orribly complicated. The rankings go the second way and the race has a choice of including everything or having two systems so they count everything.

it doesn't have any great effect though. Patty's tournaments after number 17 add little to her total and if you took them off she would still be way ahead -400+ points - ahead of Serena. The race is telling you what the rankings tell you. Patty is consistently good. Serena is rarely excellent but otherwise poor or injured.
