The First Player to Never Retire

Monica Seles has been hounded and dogged by reporters and fans asking her when she is going to retire. Just before the U.S. Open, she finally admitted that she doesn't believe in official retirements. Does this mean she's retired, or just retired from the pro tour and moving into charity and WTT events, or that she still hasn't made up her mind?

There is nothing more beautiful than Evonne Goolagong in full flight moving across a tennis court.

At first I thought this was going to be a thread about players who never retired from a match due to injury...

I've got a feeling Navratilova will never retire...she was pretty pissed off at Wimbledon because they didn't have a Women's Wheelchair Doubles. I think she wants to take up Wheelchair Tennis to increase her Wimbledon total...

I am sure Christ Evert could help her out with that. Chrissy could run her over in the parking lot after one of her charity events

Did Seles, Hingis, or even Kournikova OFFICIALLY ever retire?

Let them eat cake.

My understanding is that Monica has not ruled out completely the possibility of returning to competitive tennis hence the lack of official retirement status.

Whether people believe that she's really going to play again or believe that she means to is open to interpretation.

I read some Monica still holds out hope of making a coming back so she hasn't offically retired yet. But its been over two years since she last played on the tour and it seems unlikely. But it keeps the door open if her body will allow her to. I hope she doesn't now she has nothing to prove and I don't want to see her fade like she was starting to before her injury. I remeber her as a great champion and she doesn't deserve to remebered as anything less.

Well, I guess if anybody is used to dealing with 2 years away from the tour and then making a comeback, it's Monica. Wouldn't it be great if Seles, Hingis, and Kournikova got wildcards and all came back at the same tournament- say the 2006 Australian Open?!? How great for tennis would that be?

I'd probably stop everything and remain glued to the television.

I don't think Natasha ever retired either - she just stopped playing if indeed she has.
