She's a lot more credible than Mauresmo at #1. Not to offend Momo fans, but it's true.

Really, don't even look at me...

well she has won a major and the YEC... but anyway.
she retired from a match because of 2 injuries.
maria is still 18 and could still be the future.
if you don't see another slam in an 18 year old who is making the semifinals or better of pretty much every tournament she plays in, then i guess i don't need to have this conversation with you in the first place.

I mean, hey, she was in a slam semi 3 times this year + one quarter not to forget she had 3 mp to get in a final! Not that bad at all for the so-called "worst number 1", is it?

The rankings system is crap anyway. But shes only 18.

I think she would win more friends if she behaved differently though (maybe wearing some decent clothes would help). Dropping out of the Biejing match for an "injury" will not help her cause.

The hype at ESPN gets a little stupid. Luke Jensen was on ESPN radio, and Mel Kiper asked him -
Who is the next Chris Evert?
Luke Jensen said Maria Sharapova.

That's what ESPN tennis people discuss in their meetings. The need to push Maria as the future of American tennis.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....

All I can say is that I don't feel she has earned the number 1 ranking at all this year. She is a great talent but she hasn't been the number 1 this year. I think the only 3 people that could be argued as no.1's for this year because of their consistency through long periods of time have been Kim 1st Lindsay 2nd and Justine 3rd. Maria hasn't done anything in months and the last tough tournament she won was Doha all the way back in February. She's made 3 slam semi's but Kim won the U.S. Open and it's Series, Lindsay made the finals of Wimbledon,Australia, and quarter's of 2 other slams and has won tournaments througout the year, Mary has made 2 slam finals and won a tier I, Venus won Wimbledon, Serena won the Australian, Justine dominated the clay season and won Roland Garros so really to me the top 6 players of the year have been Venus, Serena, Justine, Kim,Lindsay and Mary.

Lorena Ochoa
Julieta Granada Minea Blomqvist Sophia Sheridan Suzann Pettersen Annika Sorenstam Paula Creamer Grace Park

What you really mean is that you HOPE that she won't win another slam in the future. I think Sharapova is a better #1 than Mauresmo. "Worst" is a word not suited to be used in relation to a #1. It's true that Sharapova isn't a convincing, undesputable #1,but the fact that she heads the rankings nevertheless means that she (or Mauresmo and Davenport before her) played some great tennis to get there.

Do you have to ask? The guy practically advertises himself as a Maria hater in almost every second post. Just like the one in this thread.

Such high standards. 3 Grand Slam semifinals ... easily dismissed?

What kind of crap is that?
