Maria retired out of nowhere

... after her father advised her to. She looked fine until then.

Weird.

"Even if I couldn't walk I'd want to finish the match," a dejected Sharapova told reporters. "It's something that I can't control. It's a very mysterious injury.

"It was getting worse and worse with every shot."

Sharapova's injury is the same right pectoral muscle strain that forced her out of last month's Los Angeles Open.

"In reality, yes it hurts and it's very painful. I had an MRI in L.A. and they said it was just a muscle problem or inflammation," said the Siberian-born teenager.

"It's kind of up and down and it comes unexpectedly. I took a week and half off to get ready for the U.S. Open and after all that it was still not better so that's a concern."

I saw the first set of this match and Maria simply couldnt compete with Kiralenko. There was no injury apparent.

This is exactly the sort of thing that winds people up over her father. It could be seen as a "saving face" order. It looks alot better if she "retires" than gets beaten, which she was going to get.

omg... I now understand why the crowd might have booed her

if her injury wasn't apparent and she was loosing before she retired ...

So she faked an injury, so she wouldn't be beaten by Kirlienko. Now I wonder why I dislike her...

Seeing Maria play over the last year, I don't believe for one minute that she would fake an injury. She fights until the last ball....a healthy Maria would've pulled out a victory against Maria K.

Really, don't even look at me...

What do you mean - she "faked" an injury?! Maria has been troubled by this injury for months; she just doesn't like to talk about it unless asked and doesn't use it as an excuse, unlike some players.

Now I wonder why I hate some posters...

i agree, i think even if she didn't look "injured" it's possible that she could have been because on a healthy day she would beat Maria K.

Meh♥

I don't know how anyone can believe Maria would fake an injury.
How would that help Maria? It still counts as a loss.

I don't think she faked it. It's probably one of those injuries that you could literally play with, but to endure the pain wasn't worth it. She could probably do a normal swing, but it probably hurts alot to swing and gets gradually worse.

I saw the match and she played so bad that I'm shure she was injured.
and what other "sign of an injury " do you expect?
that her arm falls off or drops of blood on the court?
she definitely isn''t the girl to fake an injury !

I'm very sorry for Maria. Hope it's not too serious.

I think it's the muscle between your shoulder and chest...someone correct me if I'm wrong.
