Match #1:

Ai Sugiyama Vs. Alyona Bondarenko

Ai Sugiyama and Alyona Bondarenko played one of the most competitive matches that i saw the whole day, and it was also the first, so it was a hell of a way to kick off the US Open 2005 for me. I came in at the start of the second set, after Ai i dropped the first 7-5 and she was playing very well... it was amazing how flat ai hits, but out of nowhere she can come up with massive topspin and confuse opponents... needless to say, she was consitent and scrappy and Alyona was really frustrated by Ai's playing style and made a lot of errors... alyona likes to hit the ball big and flat, but when you face a WALL like ai, that is tough to do

One thing that i noticed about Alyona's game was her serve... but not on a good note, it was very poor... first serves she would spin in at a max of 90mph and second serves, a measly 65-75 mph... Ai did not attack as well as i would have liked to seen her have, coming to net and the like, but she still play a consitent match with winners here and there but most of her points coming off of Bondarenko's errors and erratic playing style

I came back at 2-2 in the third set, (i left at 3-2 in the second, ai up) and matched the rest of the match from the top... alyona was very tired and that proved to be the end of the match, as Ai ran circles around her and got every ball back... after the match, i saw Ai's mother and congratulated her on her daughter's win... she was a very nice lady and thanked me politely

End Result:
Ai Sugiyama def. Alyona Bondarenko, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

Match #2:

Ana Ivanovic Vs. Lindsay Lee-Waters

I did not stay very long for this match, and thus i have very few pictures of both players... one thing that i noticed is that ana was not hitting the ball as hard as she usually touted... she was VERY aggressive on her service, both first and second serves, which lead to a dispicable 4 double faults in her second service game (and, obviously, an early break)

But Ana fought back hard, and i stayed till only the middle of the first set... her serve picked up a bit and so did her groundies

Lindsay Lee-Waters is a very pretty woman who grunts.... loudly.... VERY loudly... EVEN when she is warming up!!!! i never saw someone grunt so loud during a warm-up... otherwise, she hits the ball VERY hard and very flat, but she is too inconsitent to really raise her ranking up much more then where she is now... PS... ivanovic is gorgeous in person

End Result:
Ana Ivanovic def. Lindsay Lee-Waters 7-6, 6-3

Match #3:

Daniela Hantuchova Vs. Camille Pin

Second year that i have seen daniela play live, and i must say, she played much better this year than two years ago (when i saw her against vakulenko)... but needless to say, my girl daniela needs to pick up her game if she wants to really go deep and do the damage in the draw that i know that she can do

I saw the entire first set, and for the most part, it was the story that you would expect from the match-up: hantuchova blasting groundies and serves while pin stayed back, content to hover 6 feet behind the baseline, popping up moonballs and junk shots until hantuchova would either produce a winner or error... luckily, today, hantuchova used her power shots correctly and didnt just go for the lines all the time and really overpower pin

Pin's serve was disappointing to say the least, really no pace and alot of slice, but not enough to trouble a tall player like daniela... hantuchova would constantly slam down backhand returns for winners or forced errors... daniela really put constant pressure on pin, and it was good enough for the win

One thing that i noticed was daniela served EXTREMELY well (the 109 mph pic on the bottom is one of her aces)... many of her servic points were aces, unreturnables, or short returns that produced winners... set point in the first set was a gorgeous ace down the tee... on the downside, her forehand was looking pretty erratic... she would produce an amazing winner one point and then miss and easy put away on the next... overall though, dani is looking good, fit, BEAUTIFUL, and primed to take on the US Open

End Result:
Daniela Hantuchova def. Camille Pin, 6-3, 6-1
