Evert vs Navratilova: 1984 USO final

Currently on ESPC Classic

Note to everybody who thinks there's anyone who plays serve-and-volley today. Check that out, and watch Navratilova come to net behind every first serve, some second serves, and every short ball.

Navratilova also had better volleys than anyone on tour today. Actually, she still has better volleys, she just can't cover as much net.

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Actually, I think she still covers the net very well. I think her biggest problem is her serve just doesn't pack the sting it used to, combined with the girls now return the ball so much harder and faster than anything Chris could come up with. It also bears mentioning that, as great as the Evert/Navratilova rivalry was, Martina didn't have a contemporary serve-and-volley great to push her off the net (I'm talking Billie Jean or Margaret or Evonne Goolagong, or even Virginia Wade on a good day). When you get used to playing the same opponent in the finals time after time, you get used to their game and it almost never stays fresh.

There is nothing more beautiful than Evonne Goolagong in full flight moving across a tennis court.

It's also a match which shows off Chris' excellent court coverage (she's gets into position without you really noticing how she got there), her very sound technical game (hitting the ball so smoothly in one continuous movement) and, of course, those superbly placed passing shots, which can force MN to stretch so wide, which can dip really low or which are very acutely angled. Not to mention the lobs. It can't have been easy coming into the net knowing that on the other side was a woman who had so many options against a volleyer. Martina also held her own pretty well from the baseline that day.
