Girls' 18 champion Mary Gambale earns a wild card into the women's US Open main draw

Gambale Win at National Championships

Top-seeds Donald Young of Fairburn, Ga., and Mary Gambale of Billerica, Mass., captured the singles titles last week at the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18 National Championships, earning the players wild cards into the main draw of the 2005 US Open, which begins Aug. 29 in Flushing, N.Y.
Young, 16, and the No. 1 player in the ITF World Junior Rankings, got past second-seeded Sam Querrey, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-2, in the boys’ 18 final, while 16-year-old Gambale beat No. 2 Alexa Glatch, 7-6 (8), 5-7, 6-1, for the girls’ 18 crown.

The doubles champions at the USTA boys’ and girls’ 18 events are also awarded wild cards into the US Open. This year’s men’s doubles wild card will go to Nikita Kryvonos and Dennis Zivkovic, who won the boys’ 18 doubles title in Kalamazoo. Alexa Glatch and Vania King will receive the women’s doubles wild card after taking home the girls’ 18s doubles championship in San Jose, Calif.

In other age divisions, Nate Schnugg of Medford, Ore., took home two gold balls in the boys’ 16s event, defeating Steve Forman, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, for the singles title and then teaming with Dennis Lajola to win in doubles. Lyndsay Kinstler was victorious in the girls’ 16s, beating Maria Sanchez, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-5, for the first national title of her young career.

JT Sundling captured his fifth gold ball of the year in the boys’ 14 event, cruising past Denis Lin, 6-1, 6-1, in the final. Connie Hsu, the singles and doubles winner last year in the girls’ 12s, repeated her results in the 14s in 2005, defeating Monica Chow, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0, ret., in singles and then teaming with Jessica Alexander to win in doubles.

Twelve-year-old Jack Sock, who has won every national title possible so far this year at the Easter Bowl and USTA National Clay Court Championships, continued his streak at last week’s boys’ 12 tournament, defeating Emmett Egger, 6-4, 6-0, in singles and winning the doubles title with partner Mika De Coster.

Kyle McPhillips had an excellent run in the girls’ 12s, capturing her first national title in singles by defeating Grace Min, 6-4, 7-5. She also reached the final in doubles.
