Is Big Masha arrogant, materialistic, and out of touch, for wearing GOLDEN sneakers?

This debate is occuring on our "brother" site presently. I think these JERKS who want to criticize our BIG Masha (as opposed to our beloved little Masha, Kirilenko) need to stand down because she was wearing the sneakers/trainers her company gave her and she never brags about being rich and she is a sweet girl. Also Maria S. does so much for charity that we have no idea about behind the scenes. However, I think it is pretty stupid of Nike to throw this out there in the midst of Roger and Maria organizing and participating in benefits for Tsunami relief and hurricane relief, respectively. There really is something distasteful about the whole "our athlete is wearing trainers with real gold in them" while 25 percent of the population in Russia is incredibly poor. I don't like it one bit but until someone proves to me that Big Masha is a cruel and uncaring materialistic winner takes all kind of girl, I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Roger was given a pair as well for his victory last year. It has nothing to do with greed or being gaudy. Tell the critics to get over it.

It sounds pretty much stupid to say all those words about her just because she wore gold on a tennis shoes.

Exactly how is it that you know she does 'so much for charity', that YOU 'have no idea about'. I mean. if you have no idea, then of course, you DON'T know.

I might add, of somebody making $25,000 US a year tithes to charity, it lot bigger deal than if a multi-millionaire visits hospitals. The former is an actual sacrifice. Mind you, I'm all for athletes doing charity events and fund raisers and visiting hospitals. I just don't think that makes them special. Given their resources, its the least they should do.

Well, we know know about her publicized charitable contributions---which she does not do for publicity in my opinion, only to bring attention to things that concern her. And knowing that Big Masha is a good soul, we just have to reason that this smart and talented young woman is doing alot behind the scenes for charity we don't know about.

Oh God not another topic on this issue, players wear what their sponsors want them to. Do you think Andy wanted to wear the hideous outfits he wore during last years US Open, of course not. Players make money from their clothline, and because of that they are bound by contracts to wear what is given to them, whether they like them or not.

Geez did she go out and buy the shoes herself? She was given 9 pairs of them to wear at the tournament and she would have only used 2 of them...at least one pair was given away..
This proves nothing about Maria....it seems they talk more about Maria on MTF than most of the ATP players

I'm truly sorry that you reasoning powers are so easily co-opted. However, just so you know, most people in no way 'have' to reason that. In fact, most smart and talented people do very little for charity. That fact is one reason why the Federal tax code inthe USA is written the way it is. to encourage charitable giving.

You're assuming a player does a lot of charity work because you like her. Why not just like her, and leave the self-delusion out of it. She's 18 years old. Isn't it a bit unfair for you to project your fantasies onto her, regardless of the amount of money she has? If you're truly a fan of her's, give her a bit of space to exist in.

I don't think it is arrogant of her. If you want to point the blame, maybe you should look at Nike for making the trainers.
