Doha to become Tier I in 2007

According to Eberhard Wensky, the former tournament director of the German Open in Berlin, the WTA has now approved the Tier I status for Doha in 2007. He is saying that he thinks next year will be last time Qataris will hold the event in Berlin.

Wait wait wait. Now I'm totally Ok wasn't this year the first time that people from Qatar ran Berlin? And why is the tournament director of Berlin talking about Doha? Everything's all mixed up I'm sorry it's late at night and my brain's a bit thick right now

So Doha will be Tier I and Berlin not?

Well, your're right, it's actually a little bit complicated. It's true that Qatar ran Berlin this year for the first time. The reason was that they did not get the approval of the WTA to just "pull" the Tier I license to Qatar due to scheduling reasons. Same for 2006. But in 2007 they can make Doha the Tier I. The future of Berlin is still not clear.
I don't know why Mr. Wensky is talking about this, but you know in the last time, former organisation members always tried to get bad press for the Berlin tournament.

Sawe this comin'. Hope Germany manages to keep at least a Tier II event. Sad that it's come to this in the country that gave us Gottfried von Cramm and Boria Becker and Steffi Graf.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Hardly surprising.

I have nothing against downgrading Berlin as long as it's still there. Germany without a claycourt tournament would be shameful.

So since Doha owns the Berlin tournament, they are Berlin it to Doha and moving the Doha tournament to Berlin? Interesting

Germany will have at least a Tier II event, because Filderstadt is not part of the DTB...fortunatly...

Well this was expected I guess. At least there´s still 2006 and we´ll see what comes after that. There were some ideas like just to make a Tier II out of it or maybe even pull off a World Team Cup tourney like the ARAG World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany on the men´s tour.

Well, if it´s becomes a Tier II and there are no other tourneys at the same time (I mean, Doha will stay as hardcourt tourney very likely), a lot of players still will go to that tourney.

Dubai will be Tier I aswell, in 2006. They have $1000000 in prize money.
