Red face Mats Wilander = OWNED!

"I am sad for women's tennis. After the semi-finals I thought we could not go any lower. But the best thing about Mary Pierce in the final was her speech. She hit the ball for the pleasure of hitting the ball and didn't think about the means of hitting the ball to win the match. It is time to sound the alarm bell" -

Womens tennis might not have had it's most glorious moment at RG this year but after Wimby there is only group that should have alarm bells... and that's the mens which is so predictable at Wimby. Federer is the new Sampras there

WTA was back on form at Wimby. Much more exciting.

No Mats to comment on that though

What's wrong with Federer winning Wimbledon? He deserves it, and right now nobody can beat him on it.

We've always had problems like this between mens and womens tennis. When one or two players dominate on the women's side - commentators call it boring. When one or two men dominate, its because they are a genius!

Equally when there's a lot of upsets on the mens side its because there's so much strength in depth, when the same thing happens on the women's side its because the level of play is poor!

Federer was outstanding at Wimbledon and rightly he is given all the plaudits for playing a flawless match. But when Martina, Steffi, Serena and Venus dominated, the level of competition was criticised. Having said all that however, and as much as I adore Mary, the FO final really was very poor this year

as if Federer is the one to blame to be ahead of the others. bad bad Federer to play so good tennis that no1 can keep up

btw Nalbandian and Safin can keep up with him but they are not at their best right now

It was only criticized when the sisters dominated.

It was much, MUCH, worse back in the early 80's when Navratilova and Evert dominated. A couple of the male players were outspoken about saying that MAYBE only the top 3-4 players could play and that everyone else was a fat cow.

No, the sisters were criticized because the slam finals were crap.

Consider Graf for example. She dominated for 10 years but no-one complained because she presented us a lot of all-time classic slam finals (eg. FO 87, Wim 88, FO 89, Wim 89, Wim 91, FO 92, Wim 92, AO 93, FO 93, Wim 93, USO 94, Wim 95, USO 95, FO 96, USO 96, FO 99).

OK, in the U.S. there was some criticism but that was due to Graf not being American ...

I think Steffi suffered in the U.S. eyes after the 1988 title (completing the Grand Slam)- she jumped on a plane for Germany only minutes after winning, and didn't stick around for any of the hoopla that accompanies winning a major. I can't say that I blame her, but it certainly left a bad taste in the U.S. toward Graf. The New York fans never really warmed up to her until after the Seles comeback in 1995.

There is nothing more beautiful than Evonne Goolagong in full flight moving across a tennis court.

It really wasn't. Women's tennis has always been criticised for being dominated by one or two players - the difference when it was Serena and Venus was that they were clumped together so it seemed even more one sided.

Hmmm - not sure I agree with you there. As much as I loved Steffi, she did receive a lot of criticism for being so dominant. Well, maybe not her per se (not her fault!), but the rest of the tour for being so far behind her. Its always happened in women's tennis - whereas the men get plaudits when they dominate

Steffi had to prepare for the Olympics. She had a job to do. Winning the "GOLDEN Grand slam"!

Well, I complained. I have respect for Graf for her achievements but I got really tired of her one-dimensional forehand play. At some point Graf started to use the dropshot, but there was nothing more to it.

Wilander always bashes women's tennis. It seems like the pencils are sharpened more whenever two girls are playing.

Graf's play was like chess for me. She was not just bashing the ball, she slowly was preparing the kill.

Wilander and almost all the ATP greats had the most respect for one WTA player and only for one:
Steffi Graf.

BULL!! Americans have always loved Steffi. It's the American sportswriters who didn't like her, and some of them still don't.

Anybody who pays attention to what Wilander or Pat Cash say about women is just plain stupid!!
