As good a player as Hingis was, at her best, she should have improved her game and lasted longer. What she lacked in sheer power she made up in anticipation. She was able to sense where her opponents shots were going so was able to be there and hit the ball early, putting her opponent off balance. For a while she had a very good serve but perhaps due to playing too many tournaments, it became weaker and inconsistant near the end. The primary reason, IMHO, that Martina lost the FO final to Graf was due to arrogance. She had the match nearly won having won the first set rather easily and up a break in the second, when the meltdown occurred. She did not need that point. She acted like a jerk, which turned the crowd and me against her. Having lost her concentration, she opened the door for Steffi. One does not let a great champion back into a match purposely. Martina did not mean to do so but being immature, did just that. She primarily lost the AO final to Jennifer due to her lack of being in her best possible shape. She did not seem to want to work out in a serious way, which lessened her potential. Justine and Martina are about the same size, but Justine is the more powerful and in better shape. Another problem for Hingins was her mother. She should have dropped her mother as her coach a year or two before her game went down hill. Whatever, she did have a great carrer but I do think she could have done even better. She was a joy to watch. Even if she had improved she would not have been capable of dominating the bigger babes, but still would have caused them fits and had her share of victories over them.

Martina's short career will forever be debated as to why she decided to retire at 22...but lately she's been playing in the WTT (World Team Tennis) for the New York Sportstimes and has won all her matches except one single match to Meghann Shaughnessey 3-5 so while she's not playing top-notch pros apparently from all reports doing well and having lots of fun.

Yes, things might have changed if she had employed the services of a fitness trainer and a new coach Certainly after her second ankle surgery she came back too early and found her mobility was affected, slowed her down considerably and with each subsequent match started to lose to lesser seeds and realized that her game had suffered and she couldn't compete at the same level anymore. But Marti went back to school, did some commentating, did some competitive horseback riding and didn't seem to miss the tennis courts....but after a couple of years out....and having seen the likes of Myskina and Kuzzy win slams...the Belgians out with injuries, + the Sisters, I think she started to think...well...maybe I can compete...all I know she's giving the WTT a "whirl" whether that will convince her to come back its hard to say...right now she's just having fun playing tennis again (and winning!)
