Question Remember when (Williams sisters and Oz)

It was suggested by some in the Williams fans camp that they didn't like the Australian Open or that it lacked in prestige compared to the other slams like Wimbledon and US Open?

It was also suggested by some in the non-Williams fans camp that the sisters would never prepare early enough in the year to compete well at the Australian Open or that the surface didn't suit their games?

Well and then 2003 Australian Open happened. All-Williams final laid those speculations to rest forever.

Also, I was just looking at Serena's slam record the other day and noticed that the last player to beat Serena at the Australian Open was Martina Hingis in 2001 (yes, it was that match, and yes it's been that long ago! )

So I guess it's safe to say that the OZ has become a little favourite of Serena's, eh? Soon Venus will join her?

Oh and the point of this thread was more for the last sentence rather than trying to vilify those in the past who wrote the Oz or the sisters off.

i was thinking about that the other day re the last person to beat Serena in Oz was Martina.
guess great minds think alike
i however did think their refusal to play warmups was the reason they didnt do as well as they should have
i think the AO surface suits their game, Serena's especially. and she's proved it with 2 slams she says she loves Australia they get good support there.
re. Venus, why not. she can play on any surface.
i love the AO. its so relaxed and for some reason, "clean" is another word i associate with it

yes, i think i would like to see Venus play Sydney, that way even if she lost there then she will be prepared, i men i would prefer her to lose at Sydney then the Aussie....

...but if playing a warm-up would affect her health then i wouldnt want her to.

Exclamation

I think after Serena suffered that ankle injury at Sydney a few days before the Open, they have been hesitant to go back to that tournament. I wish there was another Tier II tournament in Australia or New Zeland two weeks before the AO. I think many top players would play that tournament if on existed.

Good Luck In 2012 To The Following:
Venus Williams
Serena Williams
Vania King, Sloane Stephens
Michael Joseph Jackson|1958-2009|RIP King of Music

Whitney Elizabeth Houston|1963-2012|RIP Queen of Music

I think the Rebound Ace suits Venus even better than Serena, so she wiill have an Aussie Open title or two before her career is over.

I wish Serena can win another French though.

After Serena won in 2003, she said that the Australian Open wasn't awarding her enough prize money because once converted to US dollars, it was paltry compared to the other Grand Slams and felt like it wasn't worth the time and travel if the prize money wasn't going to be increased. I don't know the proper context of that comment because just a few days before, Serena was joking that she likes to go shopping and usually ends up spending thousands on clothes and shoes that she never wears.

"There are more dogs than women in the locker rooms" - Liz Smylie
"I'm really feeling my balls" - Serena Williams
"She had him in her box... It made his week!" - Tracy Austin
"Tell us Rafa, what else do you do with your right hand?" - Todd Woodbridge
"I have a pain here, in my famous ass" - Rafael Nadal

I think the sisters just never hit their strides fully until Wimbledon. This is not to say they NEVER play well before Wimbledon, but they just seem to be fully in rhythm after Wimbledon.
